1. 1. Justin Stephens
 2. 2.

"We're not reading and writing across and down the page anymore. We're reading and writing in three dimensions: across, down, and out, the 'out' being hyperlinks. It's a whole different kind of literacy; it's a whole different kind of writing; it's a whole different kind of reading. It's a type of literacy that can't be done anywhere else but on the web."

 3. 3.

All of these sites connect people through technology using:

Videos

Personal blogs

Pictures

Posts

Live conversations

chat

Video conferencing (skype.com)

 4. 4.

Facebook

Blogger

Twitter

Skype

Xanga

pros and cons

 5. 5. Click here: “ Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.” -Facebook.com
 6. 6. Click here: “ Now we're a small (but slightly bigger than before) team in Google focusing on helping people have their own voice on the web and organizing the world's information from the personal perspective. Which has pretty much always been our whole deal.” -blogger.com
 7. 7. Click here: “ Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing? ” – twitter.com
 8. 8. Click here: “ Skype is software that enables the world’s conversations. Millions of individuals and businesses use Skype to make free video and voice calls, send instant messages and share files with other Skype users. Everyday, people everywhere also use Skype to make low-cost calls to landlines and mobiles.” –skype.com
 9. 9. Click here: “ Xanga is a social blogging website. Launched in 1999 as a way to share book and music reviews, Xanga is now one of the top social networks in the world. As a combination of a social network and a blog host, Xanga offers the best of both worlds by letting bloggers maintain a list of friends and join blog rings.” -About.com
 10. 10.

Pros:

Social networking can be very positive to the classroom experience. Students could stay connected through messaging, blogging, and many other forms of communication. Skype can be very good for the classroom, because it is free to use. Classrooms can connect to others around the country and or world.

Teachers in the school that I work at all have their own blogs. They make these blogs available not only to students but to parents as well. These teachers post not only homework assignments, but also what is going on in their classrooms each week.

Cons:

Social networking sites can interfere with school work and encourage students to worry about socializing more than their studies.

Social networking also puts someone’s information out their on the web, and some parents do not want their children’s information on the web. We must be very responsible when using these sites in and out of the classroom.

*In my classroom, I would love to use blogger and skype. I will most likely shy away from the other sites. I use facebook at home, will not use it to communicate with students.
