Ancient kingdoms of West Africa (Ghana, Mali and Songhay) By: Will Kraft
??? Essential Question ???

How did the Western kingdoms become so powerful?

Introduction

There were three major kingdoms in Western Africa, Ghana , Mali , and Songhay . They were known as the Sahelian Kingdoms. They were called this because the kingdoms were in the Sahel, because they were able to trade with parts of Africa, Europe, and Asia. In almost a millennium (1000 years) they prospered at varying times as an economic, political, cultural, and religious center.

Ghana

One of the earliest known kingdoms in West Africa. Ghana was dominated by the Soninke, a Mande speaking people living near the southern boarder of the Sahara. Ghana was known as the “land of gold”. The kingdom lasted for 325 years.(750 A.D. to 1075A.D.). Ghana ended in 1075 A.D. when invaded by Berbers .

Berbers - indigenous people of North Africa west of the Nile Valley. One of the special facts about Ghana was they let women hold positions in government.
Mali

The founder of Mali was Sundiata Keita . Mali was in power for 300 years (1200 A.D. to 1500 A.D.). One of Mali’s rulers was Mansa Musa , who ruled from 1312 to 1337,(25 years). At it’s time, Mali was the second largest empire. The largest was the Mongolian empire in Asia.

Songhay

At first this kingdom was under rule of Mali but broke away and established itself at around 1350 A.D. and stayed until 1600 A.D.(250 years). Songhay was larger than Mali and was built around the Niger River .

Songhay became so large, it became very hard to control. Soon, the kingdom fell due to a series of revolts.
Things I already knew

All I knew about my topic was that there were tribes and the Egyptians.

Important things I learned?

I learned that there were 23 kingdoms in Africa. I also learned that Songhay fell because it got to big to control. And I learned that the ancient city of Timbuktu was in the kingdom of Mali .

What questions I still have now?

The one question that I still have is, what happened after Songhay fell? Were there no more kingdoms after that? Was Songhay the last kingdom?

Answer to Essential Question

My essential question was: How did the Western kingdoms become so powerful?

Answer: The Western Kingdoms became powerful because they were in a major spot for trading. So they could get goods from Africa, Europe, and even Asia.
