  2. 2. Early History <ul><li>15th century BC. First mention of the city of Gaza . </li></ul><ul><li>Samson was delivered into bondage by Delilah. </li></ul>13th century BC the area was taken over by the Philistines.

Recent History <ul><li>1517 Gaza fell to the Ottoman empire who ruled it from 1517-1799. </li></ul><ul><li>1799 Napoleon captured Gaza City in. </li></ul><ul><li>1832 Muhammad Ali made Gaza a part of Egypt in </li></ul><ul><li>1919 Gaza became part of the British Mandate of Palestine </li></ul>
  4. 4. 1947-1949 <ul><li>1947 Partition plan, the Gaza area was to become part of a new Arab state. </li></ul>24 February 1949 the Israel–Egypt Armistice Agreement Egypt remained in control of a strip of land along the coast, which became known as the Gaza Strip. 22 September, 1948 All-Palestine Government was proclaimed in Gaza City by the Arab League. Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip or Egypt were issued All-Palestine passports

Current Status <ul><li>Gaza does not belong to any sovereign state. </li></ul><ul><li>Israel and Egypt closed its border crossings with Gaza. </li></ul><ul><li>Israel forigen Minister, Zipi Livne– “ Gaza is no longer occupied , Israel does not exercise effective control or authority over any land or institutions in the Gaza Strip” </li></ul><ul><li>Palestine Authority Chairman, Mahmoud Abbas stated, &quot;the legal status of the areas slated for evacuation has not changed.“ </li></ul>

Gaza Strip vital statistics <ul><li>Per capita income of $625 a year. </li></ul><ul><li>Economic output in the Gaza Strip declined by 1/3 between 1992 and 1996. </li></ul><ul><li>60% of the population below the poverty line. </li></ul><ul><li>17.5% of children aged 6–59 months suffer from chronic malnutrition. </li></ul><ul><li>53% of women of reproductive age and 44% of children are anaemic . </li></ul>
