  2. 2. Valley Region <ul><li>The valley is a flat land that is surrounded by mountain.
  3. 3. Valleys are good farming areas.
  4. 4. Valleys also have lots of rivers. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Coast <ul><li>Most people live by the coast.
  6. 6. The coast is very pretty.
  7. 7. The coast is near the ocean. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Mountain Region <ul><li>Mountains have many mines in it.
  9. 9. Mountains also have many animals living on the mountain. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Desert Region <ul><li>A lot of animals have homes in the desert. Plants live their too. One animal is chameleon and one plant is a cactus. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Sir Francis Drake <ul><li>In 1579 drake exploers California.
  12. 12. He stole gold from the Spanish and came to California to repair the boat from the heavy gold. </li></ul>
  13. 13. Juan Cabrilloa <ul><li>Juan Cabrillo lands in San Diego Bay.
  14. 14. In 1542 he sailed north looking for a way to get to China for silks and spices.
  15. 15. He died fighting Indians when he tripped over a rock during battle. </li></ul>
  16. 16. Pio Pico <ul><li>Po pio was a govner.
  17. 17. Po Pio went to Mexio to hid dering the Mexio and Amaren war. </li></ul>
  18. 18. Sebastian Vizcaino <ul><li>In 1602 Vizcaino lands in Monterey bay.
  19. 19. He trapped animals for fur. </li></ul>
  20. 20. Serra <ul><li>Serra owned a mission after he worked in a mission.
  21. 21. Serra also worked in a missionary in 1749. </li></ul>
  22. 22. Portola <ul><li>Portola worked for Serra.
  23. 23. He also became a priest.
  24. 24. In 1767 Spain sent a soldier named porol'a </li></ul>
  25. 25. Ranchos <ul><li>Ranchos are farm land.
  26. 26. Rancho wifes would make dinner. </li></ul>
  27. 27. Mission <ul><li>Missions had many Indians in it.
  28. 28. At lest more than 80,000 of Indians were brought to the mission system one way or another. </li></ul>
  29. 29. Pueblos <ul><li>Pueblos are used for farming.
  30. 30. Settlers and Indians lived there. </li></ul>
  31. 31. Sutter <ul><li>In 1841 John Sutter had built a fort that became know as Sutter's Fort.
  32. 32. It was located in Sacramento. </li></ul>
  33. 33. Ivan Kuskov and Fort Ross <ul><li>In 1812 Ivan Kuskov came to CA.
  34. 34. Ivan and settlers built Fort Ross. </li></ul>
  35. 35. Jedediah Smith <ul><li>In 1826, Smith led the first group of settlers to C.A.
  36. 36. He was a trapper and an explorer and one of many pioneers to come to California. </li></ul>
  37. 37. James Beckwourth <ul><li>In 1850 James Beckwourth led settlers to C.A.
  38. 38. He led them though the Sierra Nevada mountains.
  39. 39. The path he found was later called Beckwourth Pass </li></ul>
  40. 40. John Bidwell and John C. Fremont <ul><li>They both brought settlers to C.A.
  41. 41. When they did they explored and made maps. </li></ul>
  42. 42. 49'ers and James Marshall <ul><li>James Marshall found gold which started the gold rush in 1848.
  43. 43. Miners arrived in 1849 by over land, or boat by the Isthmus of Panama or Cape Horn. </li></ul>
  44. 44. Sam Brannon and Levis Stravss <ul><li>They were two businessmen who made it rich by selling needed supplies.
  45. 45. Levis made pants pockets. </li></ul>
  46. 46. Biddy Mason <ul><li>Biddy Mason was born on 1818. She was born in slavery.
  47. 47. Biddy Mason petitioned for her freedom. </li></ul>
  48. 48. Mary Tape <ul><li>Mary Tape was a Chinese immigrant who lived in San Francisco in the late 1800s.
  49. 49. Tape and her husband argued that the city should change this rule. </li></ul>
  50. 50. Mexican American War <ul><li>In 1848 Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalo.
  51. 51. CA BECAME part of state hood. </li></ul>
