  2. 2. <ul><li>Bernini was one of Italy’s most influential artists during the Baroque Period. He in fact was one of the founders of Italian Baroque sculpture and was known also for his architecture. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Born December 7, 1958 </li></ul><ul><li>Born in Naples, Italy </li></ul><ul><li>Moved to Rome in early youth </li></ul><ul><li>Father was a sculptor </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>While father was doing work, Gian Lorenzo was noticed by Pope Paul V and Cardinal Scipione Borghese. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>During his teenage years and early twenties, he worked for the Borghese family. He was a fan of Greek mythology and depicted some of the stories before he got into doing religious work. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>The Reformation and Counter-Reformation had been taking place during Bernini’s lifetime. One way of Countering the attacks on the Church were through art. Bernini was a top player in this game. </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>Jesuit teaching was a result of the Counter-Reformation. Bernini followed Jesuit teaching which included specific spiritual exercises. The purpose was to get back to how Christ lived and follow His ways with a focus on prayer and reflection. </li></ul>
  8. 8. <ul><li>In 1623 Maffeo Barberini took the throne as Pope Urban VIII. He had close ties to Bernini and had Bernini working from the start, beginning with St. Peter’s. </li></ul>
