5th Grade Ch 9 Lesson 1 What Is The Structure Of Earth

 1. 1. Ch. 9 Lesson 1 What is the structure of Earth?
 2. 2. 4 layers of Earth
 3. 3. The Structure of Earth's Interior [01:32]
 4. 4. Another Structure of the earth animation
 5. 5. crust outermost, thinnest layer continental crust oceanic crust made of granite- incl. continents made of basalt- incl. ocean floor- 6-11 km thick
 6. 7. continental rise = beginning of oceanic crust
 7. 8. Structure of the Earth animation - Shows currents in mantle mantle solid hot rock- can flow like liquid top part + crust lithosphere
 8. 10. core- center made mostly of iron 2 parts: magnetic field outer core- liquid (flows in currents) inner core- solid
 9. 12. The Four Layers of the Earth's Interior: Inner Core, Outer Core, Mantle, and Crust [01:16]
 10. 14. 3. Test materials to see how respond to heat & pressure 2. measure earthquake vibrations- seismograph 1. study mantle material from cracks Ways scientists study Earth’s interior
 11. 15. The Mantle: The Asthenosphere, Upper Mantle, and Lower Mantle [02:29]
 12. 17. Online Quiz
 13. 18. Name that layer
 14. 19. core

Earth’s center

 15. 20. crust

made of granite or basalt

 16. 21. core

made mostly of iron

 17. 22. crust

outermost, thinnest

layer

 18. 23. mantle

solid hot rock that can flow like liquid

 19. 24. core

creates Earth’s magnetic field

 20. 25. mantle

biggest layer of Earth

 21. 26. mantle + crust

together form lithosphere

 22. 27. core

inner part is solid

 23. 29. The Earth Bowl

The homework monitor will need to get a tray which contains the following:

A plastic baggie, with graham cracker.

Nilla wafer cookies A container of black cherry Jell-O

A container of lemon Jell-O

A spoon

A bowl

DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE MATERIALS AFTER YOU HAVE RECEIVED THEM. WAIT UNTIL I EXPLAIN WHAT TO DO.

 24. 30. The Steps to Making the Layers!

Put Nilla wafer in the bottom of the cup.

Next, lemon Jell-O and put it in the bowl.

Then, put black cherry Jell-O on top of the lemon Jell-O.

Last, you will need the plastic baggie containing graham crackers. Break the graham crackers up in the bag. DO NOT POUND TOO HARD! YOU DON’T WANT THE BAG TO BREAK! Sprinkle the crumbs on top of the black cherry Jell-O.

 25. 31. You have now made the Layers of the Earth. *The Crust (graham crackers) *The Mantle (black cherry) * The Outer Core (orange) * The Inner Core (Nilla wafer) Draw a picture of it in your notebook, labeling it with the name of the layer and the ingredient.
