5. 5. International House President Harker has stated that he wishes to take the University to the next level. One would expect a flush of capital improvement projects over the next decade The University of Delaware must ensure it is not behind the curve on emerging technology. We understand a campus-wide implementation of such a project would be a significant investment for the University. A preliminary study would be necessary to calibrate the program for precise execution.

 12. 12. International House Access (PDI) and ID Card Integration (PICI)‏ A PICI card would alleviate many of the headaches faced by both students and the University.
 13. 13. International House Benefits of PICI

Ease of use

Integrated card would provide a one-stop, user-friendly vehicle for accessing University Services

Increase Campus Security

Cost Effective

Computer managed system

Easy record keeping for Residence Life staff

No need for facilities to “re-core” locks; expensive key replacement for students

 14. 14. International House Rationale for Using the International House as our Test Case

Currently undergoing renovation making hardware installation less expensive

The house is a small, contained residence for an experimental trial

International Students are the perfect audience for this trial

Living in entirely new environment; providing better comfort

Demographic make-up lends to more tech integrated cultures

 15. 15. International House Potential Problems/Opposing Arguments

♦ What happens to card at the end of the school year if students choose to live in a different dorm building next year?

Will the University of Delaware have to pay for more to develop additional cards each year?

No: UD deactivates card at the end of the year if student moves to another dorm

♦ What happens if card is lost? Doesn’t the University lose money? Doesn’t person lose ID and building access? Bill Fitzpatrick concerns (oversees one-card operations at UD)‏

Student has the card deactivated and pays a fee of $10-$15 to obtain a new card; so UD doesn’t really lose money

 16. 16. International House

In today's world of access control, the process of selecting an access control system is more challenging than ever due to the increase in the number or security vendors

In order to select the right system for the University several steps have to take place

Selecting the right system
 17. 17. International House

Who decides?

Facility Department will involve those that will operate the system on a daily basis.

Exactly what do we need?

Before a vendor is consulted, facility needs must be distinctly defined

Look at building from standpoint of security

Understand the needs of the building/campus so that added security does not adversely affect students

Take a look forward : will the system be able to cope with anticipated expansion five years from now?

Selecting the right system... A Management Plan
 18. 18. International House

Ease of use and cost

Visit other campuses that have installed the access control products being considered

Current technology may require an initial investment, but the long-term savings from a good system will result in an effective and safer campus access system

Choosing a vendor

Reputable and reliable

Familiar & with adept at using the latest technologies

Selecting the right system...A Management Plan
 19. 19. Cost Estimates Of Software

No additional cost for actual cards

Actual software is rather inexpensive

UD’s blackboard software for ID cards ranges in price from $7-$20 depending on store

Cost for hardware to support software (ie: readers) is expensive

Readers at UD range from $2800-$5,000

Depending on the total number of buildings, software support hardware can be costly

International House Identification Software for Access Control
 20. 20. International House

Extensive pre-planning

Pilot the ID/Access control system in only one location, the International house

provides an opportunity to see how it works on the ground, iron out the kinks and get it ready to roll out to the entire university

Training

Supervisory management will be adequately trained to operate the system

Selecting the right system…A Management Plan
 21. 21. International House Conclusions

Feasibility Study

School Safety

By involving the right decision makers, defining needs, evaluating the systems, vendors and manufacturers, and performing the installation in a sensible manner, the right decision can be made

Propel UD into the future, with your help!
