  2. 2. The Kinara A Kinara is a wooden candle holder. It holdes 7 candles. One candle is black, for the color of there skin. The blacck candle goes in the middle of the Kinara. There are three red and three green candles. They place the red on one side of the black, The color red is for the struggles they sometimes face. The color green is for hope for a better future. Not only do the candles mean something, they also have there own principle. The first day is about unity, there’s one for self-determination, and on e for collective work and responsibility.
  3. 3. History Kwanzaa was started in 1966 by a professor of black studies. It’s an African-American holiday for celebrating there African heritage. Kwanzaa is based on a Swahili word that means ‘first fruits of the harvest’. They celebrate unity when they light the black candle on the first day of Kwanzaa. On the third day the whole family does a chore together. On New Years Day they light the last candle and celebrate faith. There relatives come and have a big dinner. Then they have a party it is a great way to start the New Year!
