  2. 2. Essential Question <ul><li>What was the point for the Afrikaner nationalists to make apartheid? </li></ul>
  3. 3. Why I chose my topic <ul><li>I chose Nelson Mandela as my I-search topic because before I had researched him, I had learned that he was an important man in africa. i wanted to learn more about him. </li></ul>
  4. 4. What I already knew about my topic? <ul><li>Nelson Mandela helped end apartheid </li></ul><ul><li>Nelson was a black leader who was put in jail for about 30 years, fighting for apartheid. </li></ul>

The beginning of apartheid <ul><li>Apartheid had started in 1948 and had ended in 1994. </li></ul><ul><li>After the Afrikaner nationalists came to power in 1948 apartheid was systematized under law. </li></ul><ul><li>Then, blacks had no rights, and were treated differently then whites. </li></ul>

The end of apartheid <ul><li>People were organizing protests, in responce the governments used deadly force putting people in jail. </li></ul><ul><li> Klerk helped pass laws to end apartheid because of their weak economies. </li></ul><ul><li>After apartheid south African’s voted for the first time, and Nelson Mandela was voted president on may 10 th 1994. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1999, Nelson resigned from his position and has become the south African’s highest ambassador. he has also campaigned in the fight against HIV/AIDS. </li></ul>
