His Life <ul><li>Giacomo Puccini was born on the 22 nd of December 1858 and died on the 29 th of November 1924. </li></ul><ul><li>He was an Italian composer who wrote many famous operas. </li></ul><ul><li>He was born in Lucca, Tuscany into a family with 5 generations of musical history. </li></ul><ul><li>He was first an organist and a choir master. </li></ul><ul><li>Puccini was inspired to become an opera composer when he saw Verdi’s opera “Aida”. </li></ul><ul><li>He later went to the Milan Conservatory to study composition. </li></ul><ul><li>He loved driving fast cars of the time, although this led to a major accident in which Puccini was nearly killed. </li></ul><ul><li>Puccini was a cigar chain smoker, and to the end of 1923 he was diagnosed with throat cancer. He went to Brussels for treatment, but a day after the surgery he died of a heart attack. </li></ul>

Style of Opera <ul><li>Puccini’s operas are very often flowing and continuous, and do not contain many breaks or pauses. </li></ul><ul><li>Puccini uses the singing in the style of speech, where characters sing short verses, giving the effect that they are talking between each other. </li></ul><ul><li>Many of Puccini’s operas contain melodies constructed with the use of sequences from the scale. These melodies that Puccini composed have become popular and many operatic singers adopt them in their songs. </li></ul><ul><li>Puccini’s operas were set outside of Italy, which was unusual for Italian composers of the time. The operas were set in more exotic places like Japan, California, Paris and China. </li></ul>
