  2. 2. 1965-1979 1965 Larry Burrows (a British photographer) witnessed the Vietnam War first hand as he joined an American army helicopter. In doing this he gave America both “the horrors of war and a classical photo-essay”. 1966 Larry Burrows was the first photographer to capture the entire war in color. -Dubbed "The Face of 1966" ---Twiggy--- dominated fashion photography. She was on every fashion magazine and teen magazine cover. (Birth name: Leslie Hornsby. As a child she was so skinny she received the nickname Twiggy.) 1967 Debut of Rolling Stone -Year of the first super bowl. 1968 Sonia Landy Sheridan is one of the first people to utilize the potential of black and white photocopy machines. The famous picture of “Black Power” was taken. This is where the symbol “Black Unity” was made, where African Americans clench their left fists in the air. 1969 Picture of cover of The Beatles album, Abbey Road -Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin Aldrin stands facing the U.S. flag on the Moon. “ The rod to hold the flag out horizontally would not extend fully, so the flag ended up with a slight waviness, giving the appearance of being windblown. The flag itself was difficult to erect, it was very hard to penetrate beyond about 6 to 8 inches into the lunar soil with the flagstaff.” -WOODSTOCK 1969
  3. 3. Continuation … <ul><li>1970 George Smith and Willard Boyle invented the charge-coupled device (CCD). This only took them an hour to sketch the basic structure. This invention allows analog signals to be shifted through the camera.  The image is read off of the CCD. </li></ul><ul><li>The Kent State shooting. The Ohio National Guard was called in to calm down a group of protestors and a tragedy came about. The National Guard began to shoot at innocent bystanders. A photo will always stick in our minds from this day. Picture: A student sitting over the body of another young child whom she didn’t even know. The expression in her face says it all. </li></ul><ul><li>1971 Jan 1, The US government ban on TV Cigarette ads went into effect </li></ul><ul><li>Feb 5, Two Apollo 14 astronauts walked on the moon. </li></ul><ul><li>1972 110 format cameras were introduced by Kodak with a 13x17mm frame. </li></ul><ul><li>Life magazines close down publications. </li></ul><ul><li>1973 &quot;C-41 color negative process introduced, replacing C-22&quot; </li></ul><ul><li>Nixon releases Watergate tapes </li></ul><ul><li>1974 THE FIRST IMAGING CCD was manufactures by Fairchild Electronics with a format of 100x100 pixels </li></ul><ul><li>&quot;People&quot; magazine began sales </li></ul><ul><li>1975: “Nicholas Nixon takes his first annual photograph of his wife and her sisters: ‘The Brown Sisters’. Twenty five years of The Brown Sisters is now available on line and as a book. He took another remarkable series of pictures of people on their front porches, normally in groups, achieving a remarkable fluency and naturalness for the large format camera.” </li></ul><ul><li>• Major amendments to U.S. copyright law as it applies to photographs and other intellectual property. </li></ul><ul><li>•  First solo show of color photographs at the Museum of Modern Art. </li></ul><ul><li>• The Steadicam, a camera stabilizing system, is first used to film sequences in Rocky </li></ul><ul><li>1976 Canon AE-1 first 35mm camera with built in microprocessor is introduced </li></ul><ul><li>1977 Elvis is found dead in his bathroom at Graceland in Memphis. His cousin was paid by the Enquirer to take a picture of his body in his casket. American photographer Cindy Sherman creates the photographic series Untitled Film Stills. </li></ul><ul><li>1978 life magazine returns as a monthly publication </li></ul><ul><li>Konica introduces first point and shoot auto focus camera. </li></ul><ul><li>  1979–First digital imaging on computers </li></ul>

Dorothea Lange <ul><li>Took the famous picture “Migrant Mother” </li></ul><ul><li>May 25, 1895 – October 11 , 1965 </li></ul><ul><li>Best known for her work in the Depression-era. </li></ul><ul><li>She learned the art of photography in New York City and was taught by Clarence H. White. She was informally apprenticed by him and went to many NY photography studios. She eventually moved in 1918 to San Francisco where she opened a portrait studio that happened to be very successful. </li></ul><ul><li>From 1935 to 1939 , Lange's work for the RA and FSA brought the plight of the poor and forgotten — particularly sharecroppers, displaced farm families, and migrant workers — to public attention. Distributed free to newspapers across the country, her poignant images became icons of the era. </li></ul>
  6. 6. 1980-1989 <ul><li>1980- A system called DX coding was introduced for 35mm films. The cassettes have an auto-sensing code printed on them which enable certain cameras to auto-sensing code printed on them which enable certain cameras to automatically set the film speed, this information can also be used by processing laboratories. </li></ul><ul><li>1980-Elsa Dorfman begins making portraits with the 20x24 Polaroid. </li></ul><ul><li>1981-Sony demonstrates first consumer camcorder. </li></ul><ul><li>1982- Sony demonstrates Movica “still video” camera. </li></ul><ul><li>1983- Kodak introduces disk camera, using an 8x11mm frame. </li></ul><ul><li>1984- Canon demonstrated the first digital still camera. </li></ul><ul><li>1985- Pixar introduces digital imaging processor. </li></ul><ul><li>1985- Minolta markets the world’s first auto focus SLR system (called “maxxum” in the US); </li></ul><ul><li>1985- Madonna’s “SEX” Book came out. </li></ul><ul><li>1986- Disposable camera FUJI. </li></ul><ul><li>1986- Kodak scientists develop the world’s first sensor mega pixel. </li></ul><ul><li>1987- The popular Canon EUS system introduced. </li></ul><ul><li>1987- First Digital Camera Canon-RC-760 </li></ul><ul><li>1988- Sally Mann begins publishing nude photo’s of her children. </li></ul><ul><li>1989-Adode Photoshop is produced </li></ul>

David LaChapelle <ul><li>A photographer and director who works in the fields of fashion, advertising, and fine art photography, and he is known for his surreal, unique and often humorous styles in photographs. </li></ul><ul><li>LaChapelle attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. </li></ul><ul><li>He became obsessed with photography after he took his first picture of his mother on vacation in a bikini holding a margarita glass standing on a balcony. </li></ul><ul><li>He has four published books of his photographs, including LaChapelle Land and Hotel LaChapelle, both containing vivid and bizarre portraits of celebrities such as Marilyn Manson, Drew Barrymore and Uma Thurman. </li></ul><ul><li> </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>Two key inventions for photography that were introduced in the 1990s were the digital camera, and Eastman Kodak's photo CD-Used to store digital images.  </li></ul><ul><li>The Digital Camera is a type of camera that records digital images electronically rather than on film, and a Photo-CD is used to store digital images.   </li></ul><ul><li>Some famous photos from the 1990s include images from the funeral of Princess Diana,  Nelson Mandela being released from prison, and many celebrity images such as the Spice Girls.  </li></ul><ul><li>Cindy Sherman-Born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey.-Did not discover her love for art and its meaning until she reached her college years.-Began studying art at the State University College at Buffalo.-Lost her passion for painting-Discovered a passion for photography. Believe it was important to find some sense of identity in photos.-Began using herself as a model.-Well known for creating characters for horror films, such as Office Killer which daubed in 1997.-She is also known for her series of photos that she called &quot;Sex Pictures.&quot; She did not pose for these picture herself, but she used dolls and prosthetic body parts instead.   </li></ul><ul><li>&quot;New Wave Painting” Popular during the 1990s in China. Things like photo blogs, social networking web sites, and many more advances. </li></ul><ul><li>2004 Kodak comes out with the film camera. </li></ul><ul><li>2005 Canon company were the first to come out with the digital frame, it started out at $3000. </li></ul><ul><li>As each year passes more and more things in photography become advanced. </li></ul>

Culture <ul><li>Why is photography important in our day in age? </li></ul><ul><li>Photography is important, because you capture anything at any moment. </li></ul><ul><li>You can get a picture on your phone, digital camera, on a cam corder, and many other advances. </li></ul><ul><li>This is a great positive in photography, because you can capture things that contain some importance. For example a crime, a birth, a world event, ECT. </li></ul><ul><li>A big advance to photography is the internet. Internet has evolved picture mania. </li></ul><ul><li>You can share pictures with friends, post pictures of your self and friends on myspace, look at galleries, post photo blogs on your self, look at the stars, important news events, and so much more. </li></ul><ul><li>Without these things its hard to survive. These photography’s help us to know what is going on in the world and your life. </li></ul>
