1. 1. An Introduction to Specialised Diplomas
    2. 2. What are Specialised diplomas?

New ‘Applied’ qualifications

Based on industry e.g. IT, Retail, Engineering

Year 10-11 and then 12-13

Foundation tier, levels 1,2 and 3

Entitlement – legal requirement

    3. 3. 14-19 Diplomas

Idea came from the Tomlinson Report

‘ A’ levels aimed at the academic student

Nothing available for students who wished to follow a less academic more vocational pathway

Tomlinson wished to maintain ‘A’ levels as the ‘gold standard’

New diplomas to have parity with ‘A’ levels

    4. 4. 14-19 Diplomas

Diplomas are designed to achieve the target, set out in the White Paper on 14-19 education, of 90% of 17 year olds in full time education or training (currently this is only 75/76%)

The diplomas will be implemented in stages from 2008-2013

These qualifications are ‘Applied’ rather than ‘Vocational’!!

    5. 5. Time and Equivalence

Engagement Diploma

Whole week?

2-3 days per week + Core Curriculum

Level 1 = 4-5 GCSEs D-G = 2 days

Level 2 = 5-6 GCSEs = 21/2 days

Level 3 = 3 Alevels = 3 days

Also a 2 Alevel certificate = 2 days

    6. 6. 14-19 Diplomas

DCSF see these qualifications, post 2013, as a single brand, therefore GNVQs and BTECs will disappear – new Diplomas to be run in tandem with ‘A’ levels and A/S levels – however, it now appears that all both ‘A’ levels and the diplomas will be evaluated in 2013

Diplomas are designed to help increase the percentage of young people who achieve level 2 and level 3 qualifications (level 2 ‘C’ or better at GCSE, level 3 ‘A’ level)

    7. 7. So Why Collaborate!?!

Facilities

Staffing

New Material development

Business Links

Specialist Element 18-30%
    8. 8. 14-19 Diplomas

Diplomas can only be offered by institutions which are part of a consortium – can’t be offered by institutions on their own - de livery of diplomas due to start with pilots in 2008

By 2013 every KS4 pupils will have an entitlement to study any of the Diplomas

    9. 9. 14-19 Diplomas

Diplomas are offered in 14 ‘Lines of Learning’ (think subjects)

These will be rolled out over the next five years

    10. 10. Travel & Tourism Retail Sport & Leisure Sept 2010 Public Services Hospitality & Catering Business Administration &Finance Hair & Beauty Manufacturing Sept 2009 Land-based & the Environment Construction & the Built Environment Creative & Media Engineering Health & Social Care Sept 2008 ICT Pilot Subject Area
    11. 11. Structure

Principal – obligatory, industry based

Generic – Functionals + personal development

Additional/Specialist – complementary or more specialist provision

    12. 12. 14-19 Diplomas

Diploma Structure

Level 1 – 600 glh – 4-5 GCSEs D-G equivalent – this will occupy just under half of the available curriculum time over the 2 years of KS4. This leaves room at KS4 for National Curriculum core and foundation subjects

Level 2 – 800 glh – 5-6 GCSEs A-C equivalent – this will occupy slightly more than half of the available curriculum at KS4, leaving time for additional learning outside the specialized diploma.

Level 3 - 1080 glh – 3 ‘A’ levels equivalent – this will occupy curriculum time broadly equivalent to that of three ‘A’ levels. However, there should also be time for specialized learning outside the specialized diploma.
