  • To help promote & preserve local music culture: Our online research has shown little information about local bands of the past, an indication that Singapore’s music culture of the past has been lost over time. Hence we’re aiming to preserve and promote the present music scene so that it won’t be forgotten over time. Why important?: A country’s music bears testament to its culture, hence we see the importance of preserving our music culture.
  • We selected these targeted user groups as they are the driving force, or the essence, of Singapore’s current music culture
  • For Activity 1: (based on interviews) Opportunities to perform are limited in Singapore due to geographical limitations & comparatively small music scene For Activity 2: (based on interviews) Networking is vital to keep the local music scene moving forward. Musicians need to find like-minded individuals to organize performances, make music etc. Meeting influential DJs and music writers is essential to help musicians to promote their music effectively to the public.
  • Physical: As already mentioned, opportunities to perform are limited in Singapore due to geographical limitations & comparatively small music scene Social: (based on interviews) Performing musicians and bands ultimately need a supportive audience, if not they’ll eventually stop producing music/disband. Cultural: -Local music scene is arguably in its budding stage, judging by the limited full-time musicians  Therefore, it is crucial to create more synergy among the players involved in order to grow the music scene. -Information on local music online is not consolidated, scattered over various websites.
  • Global viewership, local membership: The internet has definitely helped the promotion of music worldwide, hence our idea of an online music portal. However, we also want to limit the content to only local music, as this would serve our primary purpose of preserving and promoting Singapore’s music culture through a consolidated avenue of local music. To achieve this, we will limit members to Singaporeans (eg. member must login with their IC numbers), though anyone will be able view the members profiles/website’s content. Profiling & Networking: Essentially modeled after Myspace/PureVolume.com. Members (both current and aspiring musicians) can upload their content (audio, video) onto their pages for public viewing, able to make friends & communicate with other local musicians. Recording companies/radio stations can easily view profiles and contact musicians. Events Listing: A consolidated list of music events/opportunities for musicians to perform/network. Also for music fans to have increased awareness about performances. Unique features: 3D videos of performances/concerts to promote musicians, as 3D videos/movies are becoming increasingly popular (eg. Up, The Final Destination) 2. Online jamming.
  • Example of a musician’s profile page on purevolume
  • Example of a musician’s profile page on myspace music
  • To facilitate the formation of bands: Through the online portal, users can meet other musicians and jam with them online, will serve to promote the formation of more local bands. Convenient: Band members don’t need to meet at a jamming studio, can jam from the comfort of home with their own instruments. Plug-in instruments: instruments will be connected via cable to PC (already possible with current technology) and music played can be recorded directly. Possible use of holography: Holographic images of band members can be beamed into each member’s room, increases the atmosphere of jamming
  • Local musicians echo the desire for a localized music portal: Our interviews show that some local musicians would like a localized music portal so that global listeners will know where to go to find Singaporean music. Hence, we can see that our solution is in tandem with the desires of local musicians, which is important in the content generation for this website. Mostly uses existing technology: -online portal is essentially a web-based solution -3D Videos -Online jamming Plug-in instruments already exists Holography has a long history, we expect this to reach the level of sophistication required in the near future Low cost of implementation -Mostly user-generated content Convenience -Reduces need for face-to-face interaction (reduces time and social pressure)
