Introduction </li></ul><ul><li>The term Linked Data is used to describe a method of exposing, sharing, and connecting data via dereferenceable URIs on the Web. </li></ul><ul><li>Linked Data has four principles: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>- Use URIs identify things. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>- Use HTTP URIs so that these things can be referred to and looked up (dereferenced) by people and user agents. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>- Provide useful information (metadata) about the respective thing when its URI is dereferenced. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>- Include links to other, related URIs, in the exposed data to improve discovery of other related information on the Web. OpenCalais [2] </li></ul><ul><li>OpenCalais is a Web service that allows people to automatically annotate their content with rich semantic metadata, including </li></ul><ul><li>entities such as people, companies and events and facts such as acquisitions and management changes. </li></ul><ul><li>The following are aspects of the OpenCalais Web service: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>- Preprocessed content </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>- Usage quotas </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>- API invocation </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>- Forming API calls </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>- Semantic metadata </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>- Interpreting the API response </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>- RDFS </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>- Error messages </li></ul></ul>

Using OpenCalais in the context of linked data </li></ul><ul><li>The OpenCalais API can be used to process either complete or incomplete texts for which its response (output) will be in RDF </li></ul><ul><li>format that can be interpreted by appli-cations such as CalaisViewer ( http://viewer.opencalais.com ) or demo applications such as </li></ul><ul><li>http://opencalais.com/applications/rest-api-call-calais-r3 . </li></ul><ul><li>3.1 CalaisViewer </li></ul><ul><li>This Web application processes input text (Fig. 1) and outputs a page containing linked data information (Fig. 2). </li></ul><ul><li>Fig. 1. The input text is “Microsoft has released its newest operating system, Windows 7.”. </li></ul>
