3. 3. Empowering the judicial system through skill, knowledge, and technology.

Realtime court reporters offer…

the best, most accurate, most efficient means, human or technological, and best proven and most widely available method for reliably and instantly capturing and integrating the spoken word into a comprehensive and accurate information base.

 4. 4. The Best Method

Computerized reporters offer the only method for immediate voice-to-text translation via realtime technology, thereby providing counsel and the judge with instant access to the transcript during the proceedings and ensuring a faster and more efficient judicial process.

This capability is critical to the swift, fair, and accurate operation of justice. Therefore, the nation's courts should take every opportunity to make use of the skills and services that only a realtime or computerized court reporter can offer to the judicial system.

 5. 5. Why should your court utilize the services of a court reporter?

Technology -- court reporters capturing proceedings digitally as

well as on paper, facilitating

their use in litigation

support systems.

 6. 6. Why should your court utilize the services of a court reporter?

Court reporters can immediately read back any part of the proceedings efficiently.

Court reporters can quickly locate passages to read back by using keyword searches.

 7. 7. Why should your court utilize the services of a court reporter?

Court reporters can provide a printed or digital file in either rough draft or final verbatim format at the end of each session of a trial.

Court reporters can send realtime testimony of the proceedings over the internet to remote participants.

 8. 8. Why should your court utilize the services of a court reporter?

Court reporters can synchronize the audio file with the transcript.

Court reporters can provide a database of all words used in a trial, their page and line number.

Court reporters can provide quick links in electronic transcripts to scanned digital evidence.

Court reporters can provide bundled CD-ROMs, DVDs of transcripts, exhibits, and video testimony.

 9. 9. Court Reporter Professionalism

Court reporters have academic and skills training in specific areas for producing a verbatim court transcript of proceedings.

Court reporters are guided by a professional code of ethics promulgated by the National Court Reporters Association.

Certified court reporters must demonstrate that they update their knowledge by earning continuing education units.

 10. 10. Court Reporter Advantages

Court reporters do not inadvertently record attorney-client conversations.

Court reporters sort and discriminate between testimony and background noise.

Court reporters can clarify inaudible or heavily accented speech.

 11. 11. More Court Reporter Advantages

Court reporters can accurately track multiple speakers who may have similar voice tones.

Court reporters distinguish immediately “who” is speaking.

Court reporters clarify technical terms.

 12. 12. Court Reporter Cost Effectiveness

Court reporter cost effectiveness vs. digital recording cannot be weighed in salary and purchase price alone. One must consider the cost of mistrials and retrials because of technical glitches in digital-only courtrooms, the cost of testimony lost forever because of inaudible translations, the cost of reconstructing a record due to inaccurate identification of speakers.

 13. 13. Questions to ask before replacing your professional court reporter with a machine

Can the recording system discriminate between speech and background noise? Will it pick up table-tapping, coughing, paper-shuffling, etc.?

Who will be responsible for the accuracy of technical terminology?

Will the system pick up hushed bench conferences?

When will you know there is a problem with the system – when it happens or after the proceeding is over?

How will “inaudibles” and “indiscernibles” be handled in transcript production?

Who will certify the accuracy of the record?

 14. 14.

Digital recording cannot translate words into text. Digital audio requires human transcribers to create a transcript.

Digital recording cannot perform keyword searches, i.e., inputting a word verbally and the computer finding that spot on the recording automatically.

Digital recording does not identify speakers. Digital recording identifies the microphone.

 15. 15. Court Reporters and the Americans with Disabilities Act

Technology for All Americans

Court reporters provide a reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act to jurors, parties, attorneys, or judges who are deaf or hard of hearing by providing a realtime feed of the proceedings in a format that can be easily read from a computer screen.

 16. 16. When the record matters…

A professional court reporter is your best choice for accuracy, timeliness, and value.
