Transcendentalist Influences <ul><li>Platonism -- spirit is superior to matter; spirit lasts forever; matter is ephemeral </li></ul><ul><li>Romanticism - - nature is important as a source of beauty and inspiration; nature is the supreme teacher of truths; mankind is essentially good; individualism is emphasized </li></ul><ul><li>Mysticism - - people partake in mystical understanding of spiritual truths through transcendent knowledge (a means of understand that transcends or goes beyond ordinary or conventional means of learning such as logic and sensory experience) </li></ul><ul><li>Puritanism - - an emphasis on moral goodness and strength of character  </li></ul>
