  2. 2. "Let us away knights: He will rise No More..." These may have been the last words that Thomas Becket had heard before he was murdered by the knights of the man that he once called, his Best Friend.
  3. 3. Early Life <ul><li>Born in Normandy 1118. </li></ul><ul><li>English father and Saracen mother. </li></ul><ul><li>They were a well-off family. </li></ul><ul><li>Educated in Paris. </li></ul><ul><li>On return to England he joined Theobold house hold. </li></ul>

Rise in Career <ul><li>He was assigned to the Archbishop of Canterbury, who had him sent to Paris to study law. </li></ul><ul><li>Upon his return made him Archdeacon of Canterbury </li></ul><ul><li>1154 - Theobold introduced Becket to King Henry II. </li></ul><ul><li>Their Similar personalities made a strong bond between them as the King named him his Chancellor. </li></ul>

Archbishop <ul><li>1161 – Theobold Died and Henry II petitioned the Pope to make Becket Archbishop in Canterbury. </li></ul><ul><li>Henry hoped that Thomas would continue their friendship and provide him more influence over the Church. </li></ul><ul><li>However, Becket was often more independent in his thinking that made him sided with the Church rather than the King. </li></ul>

Conflict With The Crown <ul><li>Becket halted Henry’s attempt to extend his court’s jurisdiction over the clergy. </li></ul><ul><li>As a result Henry publicly questioned Becket’s honesty when he was Chancellor </li></ul><ul><li>Becket fled to France, where he excommunicated two Bishops that had stood by the King. </li></ul><ul><li>However, the dispute seemed to be resolved when King Henry visited Becket in Normandy. </li></ul>

Conflict Continues <ul><li>Becket returned to England but refused to reinstate the Bishops. </li></ul><ul><li>Henry was furious and was purported to shout “ What sluggards, what cowards have I brought up in my court, who care nothing for their allegiance to their lord. Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest.” </li></ul><ul><li>Inspired by his words, four knights sailed to England to get rid of St. Thomas. </li></ul>

Murder at the altar <ul><li>December 29 th - The knights arrived at Canterbury where they caught up with Becket at the Cathedral. </li></ul><ul><li>Drawing their swords and hacked him to death at the altar. </li></ul><ul><li>There was a general public outrage at the Murder. </li></ul><ul><li>Several miracles were said to occur at the tomb of the martyr and he was canonized. </li></ul>
