Grover Arnett: Poverty in Salyersville, Kentucky

  1. 1.  Born and raised in the town of Salyersville, Kentucky, William Grover Arnett experienced firsthand the realities of living in hard times. Growing up in a tiny three-room house with a pot- belly stove for heating and no bathroom, Grover Arnett was able to escape poverty and pursue an award-winning legal career, thanks to his education and to support from his teachers and family. Today, Grover Arnett runs his own legal practice and has practiced law at the state court and the United States Supreme Court levels.
  2. 2.  Salyersville is no stranger to poverty, having experienced hardship during the American Civil War and during the Great Depression. Crop prices fell during the Depression, and many residents suffered from unemployment and destitution. The economy was also negatively affected by severe storms during that time, and more recently, a tornado ripped through the region in 2012.
