  1. 1. So what’s up? Right now we’re working on a classification PBL. What is PBL? It’s a type of In this unit, students will student centered learning learn about classifying that allows students (with things and create their help) to create their own own organism objectives and goals . In classification system. our class, we’ll come up with classroom goals and Hopefully you’ll see the the groups will create their benefits at home when the own plans to reach them. kids try to come up with solutions to everyday problems!
  2. 2. Standards of the Unit - Students must demonstrate Productive Thinking Talents -Students will learn to work in groups - demonstrate an understanding for what classification is - demonstrate an understanding for why animals are classified into different systems - demonstrate proper classification
  3. 3. Benefits of the Unit Students will be arranged into groups so that each group consists of students with multiple intelligences to help the struggling learners. This is beneficial to the students because they will learn how to work with different types of learners. Learning about the different classification of animals is beneficial to a student as well because it is thefoundation in most higher-level sciences classes. The use of PowerPoint will also introduce the students to technology and for those who have already used PowerPoint, it will broaden the amount of knowledge that they already know about the program.
  4. 4. Unit Objectives - Students will differentiate between the previous five- kingdom and current six-kingdom classification systems. - Students will summarize the information that they collect from the different pictures of the animals - Students will classify the animals according to their different classification kingdoms systems - Students will constantly be making observations throughout the lesson about the different classification systems - Students will learn to work in groups
  5. 5. How we will help Your Role Our Roles The role of the parent is to keep The role of the teacher is to on top their student and confirm discuss classification in general. that their student in completing Ask the students what we mean all the work that is required of by classification and why we him or her. Make sure that the classify things. For example, why student is actively participating in do we classify certain objects as his or her groups work by asking tools, others as food and so on. various questions ( what they Establish that classification is the learned today, who did they work arrangement of objects, ideas, or with, etc.) Keep up with due dates information into groups and and make sure student is giving makes things easy to find, full effort identify, talk about, and study.
  6. 6. Their Roles! Students will be required to participate in the differentactivities set up in the unit. From completing a 3,2,1 exit slip, to (if time permits) making a slideshow presentation illustrating the new classification system, inserting actual pictures of various objects taken with a digital camera, andlater presenting to the class in a group. Students will need to describe the classification of animals and differentiate between the previous five-kingdom and current six-kingdomclassification systems. Students will also be required to work in groups to research classification information about a selected group of animals.
  7. 7. Curriculum Framing Questions 1. What is the life cycle?2. What can animals learn from undergoing the life cycle? 3. How is taxonomy used to classify animals? 4. What are the six kingdom classification systems? 5. What are adaptive behaviors?
