  2. 2. Forces are measured in newtons , N for short <ul><li>The unit of force is the newton . It is named after the famous scientist from Lincolnshire, Sir Isaac Newton </li></ul><ul><li>The force of gravity on a small apple is about one newton! </li></ul>
  3. 3. The Force of Gravity The force of GRAVITY of the Earth is what we call the WEIGHT of an object WEIGHT
  4. 4. What do you weigh? <ul><li>A small apple weighs 1 N </li></ul><ul><li>A bag of sugar 10N </li></ul><ul><li>A baby about 40N </li></ul><ul><li>A small Y7 350N </li></ul><ul><li>and a typical, tall, dark, handsome teacher about 800N </li></ul>

Strength of the Earth’s Gravitational Field “g” <ul><li>The Earth’s Gravity pulls with a strength of 10 newtons per kilogramme g = 10N/kg </li></ul><ul><li>This means the Earth pulls on a MASS of 3kg with a force of 3x10 = 30N </li></ul><ul><li>An engineer has a MASS of 65kg, her WEIGHT is 65x10 = 650N </li></ul>

Strength of the Moon’s Gravitational Field <ul><li>The Earth’s Gravity pulls with a strength of g = 10N/kg but the Moon only pulls with 1.6N/kg because its mass is much less </li></ul><ul><li>A 3kg mass weighs 30N on the Earth but only 3x1.6 = 4.8N on the Moon </li></ul><ul><li>Our 65kg engineer weighs 650N on Earth and she weighs 65x1.6 = 104N on the Moon </li></ul>
