Greg's 10 Favorite Things For 2010

  1. 1. 10 Favorites for 2010 Ten of my favorite tools for everyday work and life.
  2. 2. 1. Macbook Air I’m using a Gen 2 with 128Gb SSD. It’s more expensive than a netbook, but the MBA is the best lightweight, reliable portable computer around. I pair with a 24” Cinema Display for a sweet setup at my desk, placing the MBA to the left for dual screen goodness.
  3. 3. 2. Skype Sonian’s dev team is mostly virtual, and Skype allows us to all collaborate with chat, voice and video. Virtual dev teams can be hugely successful if you remove all collaboration friction. Skype is communication lubrication.
  4. 4. 3. Unfuddle Every dev team needs a tool for great project management. Unfuddle is the perfect mix of features and ease of use to support our needs for ticket management, wiki, milestones and time tracking.
  5. 5. 4. Google Docs Gmail and Google Apps/Docs is easy team collaboration. There are some rough edges on Docs and Spreadsheets, but now there is centralized document management and no more emailing Word files around to collaborate.
  6. 6. 5. Pico Pads I drive a lot and use the time for some “deep thinking” on various projects. I use Pico Pads to take a quick note and clear my mind for the next thought.
  7. 7. 6. Amazon Prime I live 2 hours from major shopping areas, so making a quick trip to the mall is not possible. Amazon Prime (free 2-day shipping for a low annual fee) allows me near immediate gratification for many items I would purchase at a store.
  8. 8. 7. Audible Some days I have a 4 hour commute, and most days I try to exercise for at least 45 minutes. Audible keeps my IPod well stocked with listening material for drive and workout time.
  9. 9. 8. Omnigraffle The Omni Group builds great products for the Mac. Omnigraffle is my favorite because I use it to create wireframes, quick graphics editing, and really has become my default tool to build a “picture” when words just aren’t good enough to describe an idea.
  10. 10. 9. iWork 09 Sometimes GDocs isn’t up to the task for a great looking presentation or spreadsheet analysis. iWork “just works” and is super easy for “Photoshop challenged” to create awesome looking visual materials.
  11. 11. 10. Useful Utilities Imagewell :: Simple image editing. Wordpress :: What more can be said? Chromium :: Waiting for official OS X. Skitch :: Screen snap and image share SuperDuper! :: Painless disk cloning Time Machine and Capsule :: Easy backup
  12. 12. Runners UP Blackberry 8703e (upgrading to a Nexus 1 CDMA Andriod phone soon.) SIRIUS Satellite Radio - ‘Chill 35’ for long commutes. Sky Planter - “Green up” the office
