NewYork City always had a few green spots, local food and good ways to
get around, but they were not part of people s perception of the city
The original Green Apple Map of NYC in 1992 helped people see and
connect with the city, its environment and sustainable living resources

In 1995, the idea of connecting many local Green Map projects with
a global iconography took shape, and the movement began to spread

Our 2006 edition highlighted energy – reasons to change now,
everyday and easy ways to reduce, renewables and climate change
We wanted to create a simple map next, on one topic. Composting is
the most efficient, restorative way to reduce waste and so, we
mapped it in partnership with Lower East Side Ecology Center

Funded by Greenacre Foundation, this edition could only include
Manhattan. It’s proven its value helping to double and triple the
dropoffs.We have published 3 printed editions

can involve diverse
community members, such
as Grow Together attendees,
who added 22 sites to a big
printout!

shared by the public
