  2. 2. DEFINITION Wibree is a radio technology which consumes only a fraction of the power compared to other such radio technologies to achieve the Bluetooth solutions.

  5. 5. Why is Wibree needed?  Ultra low power cannot be achieved with existing open standards Currently available standardized local connectivity technologies are not optimized for ultra low power applications.
  6. 6. Wibree implementations: There will be two types of Wibree implementations Wibree stand-alone chip  Wibree-Bluetooth dual-mode chip
  7. 7. Wibree stand-alone chip: For small devices (like heartrate monitors) using only short data messages and having long battery life. Examples: watches, sports and wellness devices and human interface devices (HID) such as wireless keyboards.
  8. 8. Wibree-Bluetooth dual-mode chip:  Designed for use in Bluetooth devices.  This allows Bluetooth devices to connect to a new range of tiny battery-powered devices.  Examples of devices are mobile phones and personal computers.
  9. 9. Wibree and Bluetooth  Bluetooth is a great technology and brand, adopted worldwide Bluetooth is widely used in mobile devices like PC’s and phones, as well as in wireless headsets. However, other products relying on button cell batteries as a source of power, e.g. watches, toys and human interface devices, are not served effectively by Bluetooth.
  10. 10. Wibree and Bluetooth  similarities Wibree and Bluetooth use the 2.45 GHz band to transfer data and have a 1 Mbps transfer rate and a range of about 10 meters (m). In Wibree-Bluetooth dual-mode they share the components like antenna.
  11. 11. Wibree and Bluetooth  Wibree is ultra low power technology The maximum transmitted output power of Bluetooth class is 4dBm(~ 2.5 mW). The total power consumption is much higher. The output power of Wibree standard will be around -6dBm. Each manufacturer determine its own transmit power. will

  14. 14. Disadvantage: Data transmission is very slow, i.e. only 1Megabit per second Cannot be used in high bandwidth required applications

CONCLUSION  From this we conclude that wibree will dramatically extend the battery life time of existing wireless devices.  It’s up to 10 times more energy efficient than Bluetooth.  Today wibree is not only the nokia solution it is being supported by the major Bluetooth chip vendors including Cambridge silicon radio and Broadcom. That means it will reside within the chips in almost every brand of handset.  In the end of 2009 there was over 100 millions wibree enabled handsets in existence.
