Drill #1 – Red Ball: 2 pods, 4 players each. Each pod will alternate rucks, and a scrum half
will be feeding them from ruck to ruck.
We are doing this to a) practice “red ball”, and b) practice how to exhaust the pitch, in
the sense we will start from left to right, once we exhaust the pitch we’ll start moving
from right to left.

                             Ruck #6

                                                    Ruck #5

                                                                          Ruck #4

                                                    Ruck #3

                             Ruck #2

      Ruck #1
Drill #2 – Blue Ball.
Step #1: The first pod of 4 forwards will be involved in ruck #1.
Step #2: The scrum half will get the ball from ruck#1 and will pass it to #10. The second
pod of forwards (5,6,7 and 8) will stay on #10’s left and right sides. #10 will pass the ball
and it will get to #14 who will initiate the “Ruck #2”. The Second pod of forwards will
clean the ruck #2 and scrum half will pass the ball to number #10 who will have the first
pod of forwards on his left and right, as well the line of backs except for #14 who is
involved in ruck #2. Now it is #13 who will initiate ruck #3 after he received from #12
who received the ball from #10. Finally, the first pod of forwards will clean that ruck (see
below).

                                                                          Ruck #3
                                          Ruck #2
                                                                                         13’
                                10 14’
                                                                         10

                                8 14 3

Drill #3 – Black Ball
This drill will only be performed outdoors.
There’s no big science for this, just lifting the ball from the ruck and smashing the
opponent’s post if there is any. Added to that, a second player behind the ball carrier has
a) push him and b) be the first one to clean the ruck deterring jackalers. The first pod is
involved in ruck #1 (clearing opponents or protecting the ball); the second pod will lift
the ball and move to ruck#2 where it will do what the first pod was doing in ruck #1.
Now the first pod is the one that will lift the ball towards ruck #3.
