Wanted to share this quote
Captures the point of GOKb – creating efficiencies and space for innovation with the KB
Also illustrates that the idea of a community KB has been around for a while now
So I’ll start out with a quick overview of GOKb.
First off, GOKb is an e-resources KB
Similarities to commercial products – titles, packages, platforms, holdings
Captures relationships between entities
Going beyond traditional model by capturing more complex relationships, changes over time
GOKb is also open data
CC0, ECL
Can be used by anyone, including commercial
Community managed
Data in kb is managed by the community – started with OLE partners, growing to include new
Come together to capture the global info that is the same for everyone
Can also work at different levels, like national and consortial data
Building a foundation for GOKb
Loading data using OpenRefine – focus on sourcing data, streaming lining process
Enhancement – resolving errors, title history work
APIs – allow people to use data externally – OLE, hoping it will lead to new ideas
Partnerships – getting new partners to help build; working with pubs and vendors as well
GOKb is open to public – go and check it out
Now I’ll spend a little time talking about what’s next for GOKb
First off is more data – we need to become more comprehensive to be truly useful
Working with free data sources like CUFTS and KB+
Improving our data loading process
Hoping to get bigger partnerships with data providers
We want to talk to people who want to help us build it
That leads into more partners
We also need a critical mass of people not just building but using the tool
Have OLE and KB+ hoping to implement
Looking for others who could use this data
Ebooks!
Huge undertaking – we’re still figuring out if we can do it
Buy-in from UK
Focus on decision support and tracking
Open access intersections
Tracking things like hybrid OA, embargo lengths
Pulling in cross-ref data – hybrid % idea
Linked data
This is almost done
Allow interconnections with other data sets
VIAF, LCNAF, Dbpedia
Hoping to share some demos soon
In the end
Have already accomplished our intellectual mission by getting the conversation started
Now what remains to be seen if we can really take off – with the help of the community
