Blogs and blogging

 1. 1. BLOGS AND BLOGGING
WHAT THEY ARE
AND HOW TO DO IT
2. 2. What is a blog?
A blog, or weblog, is a personal or group
website that is easy to set up and update
It looks like a diary or journal, because new entries (posts)are added from time to time
The newest entry is usually on top and the older ones below.
You can opt to share your opinions and interests with the world, or share them only with your friends and family or strictly as a personal online diary.
Readers can leave comments or sign up to read your posts as you add them.
3. 3. Why use a blog?
You can share with others what you want to say
People can go back to read it as often as they want e.g. Reminiscences of your childhood
It is like a free easy website that you can add to
You don’t have to email the same information to a whole list of people
You can find new friends with similar interests
You can use it to share photos or images of your latest project
You can have intellectual freedom to speak out
4. 4. What do I need to start a blog?
You need an email address
You need access to a computer that has internet
You need something you want to write about – it can be a craft or hobby, political or religious views, sharing about your life or advertising your business or talents
Some digital photos or images on your computer would be great to add to your blog
5. 5. What can I put on a blog?
Words, usually a paragraph or two at a time – think about what you want to write about and who you are writing for.
Pictures – photos or images
Videos
Links to other websites you are writing about or like
Buttons that allow your readers to share your post on their sites
News, jokes and quote of the day etc. Make your blog unique. You can add famous literary birthdays, or run weekly trivia quizzes , lists of favourite books and movies – whatever you like.
6. 6. Give me a video to watch about a blog
There’s a video about blogs “Blogs in plain English” at http://www.commoncraft.com/blogs
Blogger.com has videos which explain their services
Try using the word “blogging” at youtube.com
7. 7. Give me some examples of good blogs
Life sharing http://kavanaghsqueensland.blogspot.com
Art and craft www.artsjournal.com/artopia
or www.craftster.org/blog
Food www.chezpim.com
Photography http://sh1ft.org/shutterbug/
Design designsponge.blogspot.com
Cars carscarscars.blogs.com
Authors and Books www.neilgaiman.com/journal
or http://bookclubclassics.com/Blog/
8. 8. Ok, but is it hard to start a blog?
No, unlike starting your own website, it is very easy. HTML skills are not necessary to make a great looking blog.
Blogging sites are set up with easy templates for you to choose from.
Having a blog is free – you can pay for some extra features if you want them. There may be some ads on some free blogs.
Adding to your blog is very easy – you do not have to be a computer geek to do it.
9. 9. Where do I start?
Go onto the internet and pick a blog host site
Try blogger.com or typepad.com or livejournal.com or xanga.com to have a look
Create an account with the blog host you choose, by filling in an online form
VERY IMPORTANT – Write down your username, your password, and the name and address of your blog – otherwise you may forget!
Name your blog – make it interesting – and about what you intend to write about
Choose from the templates available what you want your page to look like
10. 10. Then what do I do?
Now it’s time to start - think about what you want to say – is your blog going to be about knitting or art or books or your life or your political views?
Do you want to have a picture of yourself? Or remain anonymous?
Do you want to say a few words “about me” and include your interests?
Do you want to link to any other websites?
11. 11. Making your first post
Go to your blog host site and log in – do you remember your username and password?
Your own blog site will have a link to add new post
This will open a window and you can begin to type
Pick a font that is at least size 12 and easy to read, such as Arial for Titles, and Georgia or Verdana for the text.
There are little icons at the top of the screen that allow you to use bold type, or add a link, or add a picture/photo, or do a spelling check
Don’t forget to add tags to your post – words that describe what you have written about – this helps others to find your posts.
You can see a preview of your post
When you are happy with it, click the button “publish post”
You can now view your finished post in your blog
12. 12. How do I find blogs I might want to read?
Good question – there are millions of blogs
There are searching sites you can use
Try blogsearch.google.com or globeofblogs.com or technorati.com
Others are faganfinder.com/blogs or blogstreet.com or feedster.com
These will help you narrow down to blogs in topics that you are interested in
13. 13. How do I remember these blogs?
You can bookmark them on your computer
You can subscribe to them so that when you visit your own blog you will also see their latest posts
You can arrange an rss feed update
– see your blog host site’s help section to organise this
14. 14. What if I need more help?
Your blog host usually has a help section with frequently asked questions and tips
You can borrow a book on blogging from your local library
15. 15. That’s pretty well it...
So now you are ready to have a go
Happy blogging!
