  2. 2. IMAGES OUT OF THE ORDINARYALERTED BY A TWEET EARLY ON NEW YEAR’S DAY ABOUT A RIOT AT FORD OPEN PRISON, I JUMPED IN THECAR AND WENT TO SEE WHAT WAS HAPPENING. WHEN I ARRIVED, THERE WERE JUST A COUPLE OF POLICECARS, A FEW CAMERA CREWS, ONE OR TWO FELLOW PHOTOGRAPHERS AND SOME GREY SMOKE WAFTINGAGAINST THE GREY SKY. BUT OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS THE STORY BEGAN TO DEVELOP FROMORIGINALLY BEING ONE OF LOCAL INTEREST TO WHAT QUICKLY BECAME THE BIG NEWS STORY OF THE DAY.THESE IMAGES AIM TO TELL THAT STORY: THE ARRIVAL OF THE RIOT POLICE, THE NEWS CREWS WHO KEPTTHE NATION INFORMED, THE LOCAL RESIDENTS WHO GAVE THE STORY A DIFFERENT TWIST AND THEHELICOPTER THAT FILMED EVERYTHING FROM ABOVE. THE PROBLEMS BEGAN AT MIDNIGHT WHEN AROUND40 PRISONERS STARTED FIRES AFTER REFUSING TO BE BREATHALYSED. APPARENTLY, THERE WERE ONLYTWO PRISON OFFICERS AND FOUR SUPPORT STAFF ON DUTY TO MANAGED ALMOST 500 PRISONERS. ONCETHE INMATES BEGAN SMASHING WINDOWS AND SETTING OFF FIRE ALARMS, THE STAFF RETREATED ANDWAITED FOR SPECIALIST TEAMS TO ARRIVE AND RESTORE ORDER. ONCE THE SCENE HAD PLAYED OUT,SEVEN ACCOMMODATION BLOCKS HAD BEEN DESTROYED ALONG WITH THREE RECREATION BUILDINGS ANDTHE MAIL ROOM. THE DAMAGE IS ALREADY ESTIMATED TO BE IN THE REGION OF £2 MILLION. ALL N ALL, ITWAS AN UNEXPECTED WAY TO START 2011 AND NOT QUITE WHAT I THOUGHT MY FIRST PICTURES OF THENEW YEAR WOULD BE OF! I HOPE YOU FIND THEM AS INTERESTING TO LOOK AT AS I DID TO TAKE THEM.INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY NOTICETHE IMAGES CONTAINED IN THIS PRESENTATION WERE CREATED BY GARY MARLOWE AND, WHILST BEINGAVAILABLE FOR VIEWING ON SLIDESHARE, THEY REMAIN THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OF GARY MARLOWE.© GARY MARLOWE | 2011 gary marlowe
