The art of digital storytelling

  1. 1. The Art of Digital StorytellingBy Joshua SabateThe art of Digital Storytelling, in the general sense, is the practice of using computer-based tools to create shortstories. These short stories are combined with digital content such as videos, audios, and images which typicallyfocuses on a specific topic and contains a particular point of view. Digital stories are usually short, about 2-10minutes, and are mostly used for educational purposes to tell of a particular topic, the telling of personal tales, the recounting of historic events, and a way to inform about an issue or event in a manner that is both interactiveand draws the attention of the audience. This art basically makes use of slides of images accompanied by musicand narration, but other more sophisticated means may include the integration of highly produced audio andvisual effects. There are many styles to Digital Stories. But it is possible to categorize them into three major groups: the personalnarratives or accounts of significant incidents in one’s life, the historical documentaries which examine importantevents of the past, and stories which are particularly designed to inform, persuade, and instruct about a specificconcept or topic. In order for it to be called a Digital Story, several elements must be present in the story, bothuseful and a guide to creating effective presentations.Since it aims to instruct, persuade and inform, in a digital story, the point of view of the author must be evident allthroughout the story, it is also ideal that a particular question is answered at the end of the presentation, theemotional content is also seen as an effective way of speaking to audiences in a personal and powerful way, theeconomy and pacing of words must also be considered, the use of just enough words to tell the story withoutoverloading the audience with too much information. The importance of Digital Storytelling has continuously been emphasized specially in the field of education. Thecombination of traditional storytelling with modern digital tools has both reflective and literary significance;reflective in the sense that individuals, most specially students, in the process of creating their very own digitalstory necessitate them to reflect upon specific aspects of life and be able to find a deep connection with thesubject matter being researched. Through this tool, one also is able to express and establish his/her identity byway of inexplicitly representing himself in the specific characters and stories which he/she highlights and tells.Literary, Digital Storytelling enables students to strengthen their communication skills and their literacy tomultimedia tools and techniques. By designing the manner by which to communicate and the form by which topresent, the storyteller is able to learn the dynamics of digital communication specially intended for a specificaudience. Given the vast resource and the vast strategies to present, the creator is pushed to enormous creativelatitude.Seen as the basis for education, the oral transfer of knowledge and exchange of beliefs and ideas has been inexistence even before man formally began teaching one another. Hence, the art of Digital Storytelling is but amodern development to the elemental instinct to teach beliefs and values by way of mouth. Propelled by theadvent of the digital age and the accessibility to media production techniques and software, Digital storytellinghas undergone a tremendous growth shoot, evident in modern tools in classroom education and in theproliferation of diverse personal stories and creative imaginings over the internet. For examples of Digital Stories, visit www.switotwins.comReferences:The University of Houston, The Educational Uses of Digital Storytelling, Web. 5 Feb 2013.Robin, Bernard R. “Types of Digital Stories” The educational uses of digital storytelling, Curriculum and Instruction,University of Houston.
