  2. 2. TCM is the world’s largest facility fortesting and improving CO2 captureKnowledge gained will preparethe ground for CO2 capture initiativesto combat climate change.
  3. 3. TCM – Highlights2006200920122005 Government policy: No carbon based power generationin Norway without CCSNorwegian Government and Statoil agreed 2-staged approach:1: Demonstrate and develop capture technologies (TCM)2: Build large scale (1 mTons CO2/year) capture plantInvestment decision taken for TCM.Partnership established (TCM DA)Official inauguration in May 2012Five year initial test period started

  5. 5. Refinery RCC fluegas = 13% CO2Power plant fluegas = 3.5% CO2
  6. 6. ▪ Reduce costs (Cost/kWh)▪ Mitigate risks when implementingfull-scale CC- solutions▪ Be an active part in shaping the CCS-technologylandscape▪ Ensure an acctive global network▪ Exploit synergy with other playersand institutionsDrive technology developmentthrough utilizing availableinfrastructureDevelope and position TCM in aglobal knowledge- and testnetworkEstablish CCS as cost efficientclimate solution with acceptablerisk123Develop a business model for testingtechnology at TCM which isattractive to technology-developersand technology-vendors.4
  7. 7. Testing activities at the Amine Plant• Initial test period for 15 months with Aker Clean Carbon• Focus on;• process performance, mainly energy efficiency - steam and electricity consumption• solvent degradation• emissions monitoring.• Baseline study with MEA solvent to validate simulation model as well as providing abase case for future vendors.Goal: Establish an energy efficient process and to mitigate risks when implementing a full-scale Carbon Capture Unit
  8. 8. Operational experience• High on-stream availability (over 90%)
  9. 9. • Good response to “Request for interest”(RFI) for use of the Amine plant.• Short listed: Aker, Siemens, Hitachi,Mitsubishi• The Amine test unit will be available forone of the short listed beginning 2014.Future utilization of Amine plant
  10. 10. Testing activities at the Chilled Ammonia Plant• Initial period of 13months (+ optional 6 months) based on test program developed byAlstom.• Focus on;• process optimization, including: energy efficiency, ammonia consumption and lowemissions• steady state and transient operations• impact of flue gas impurities.Goal: Establish an energy efficient process and to mitigate risks when implementing a full-scale Carbon Capture Unit
  11. 11. • CAP started in november• Established rapidly stable operations• Some disruptions related toequipment• Shut down for modifications toimprove performance• Full-scale Technology qualificationprogramme
  12. 12. TCM Operations• Plant in operation 24 hours a day, year round – similarly to aproduction plant– Each shift consists of 6 operators• 2 persons/shift/area– Amine and chilled ammonia plant& utillities• 3 control rooms - one per area
  13. 13. Discharge permit• The discharge permit regulates maximum allowed quantities andconcentrations for certain known compounds. For TCM: ammonia, amines, aldehydes• Nitrosamines and nitramines are regulated based on dispersioncalculations and ultimate concentrations in ambient air and drinkingwater• Emissions to air have the highest focus in the permit and also in thereporting

  17. 17. • Invitation to vendors to use theavailable open slot/land, utilitiesand other infrastructure• Open for acceptance until 31.06.2013Utilization of avaliable site
  18. 18. More than 4000 visitors to dateMore than 4000 visitors to date
  19. 19. • Every day, in our test centres around the world new experiences, lessons and solutions are developed• Our new knowledge is documented and captured in systems and it is carried by testcentre employees, partners and contractors.• Although much of the knowledge is private and defines our institutes’ competitiveadvantage, we believe that part of it will, when shared, benefit all of us.• Therefore, we’d like to establish a forum where our experiences can be shared in anenvironment of trust in order to further advance the capture technology
  20. 20. • Helps to make connections, capture of lessons and knowledge creation• Respects IP• Has prioritized common sharing themes• Works with a mix of face-to-face and on-line sharing activities• Has a common identity• Has a mandated contact for each member, with a rotating coordinator• May have bi-lateral sharing arrangements• Is supported (e.g. meeting facilitation, website and content collation)
