  6. 6. <ul><li>MEANING </li></ul>Benefits of writing and speaking for authentic audiences <ul><li>Students write about issues that have real M  G for them; developing ability to express F  S . </li></ul><ul><li>It M  S students who would not normally write or perform to improve their literacy skills. </li></ul><ul><li>Students develop C  N skills and engage in accountable talk. </li></ul><ul><li>The use of technology can broaden the scope of the students’ learning experiences outside of their L  L community. </li></ul>FEELINGS MOTIVATES COLLABORATION LOCAL

They become accountable in the way that writers are in real life, and this accountability is a strong incentive for clear and effective writing.” Tricia Hedge (2000)

How can we get started? <ul><li>Encourage your students to criticise / comment on what other people are writing. </li></ul><ul><li>Start little (but aim big!): </li></ul><ul><li>1. 2. </li></ul><ul><li>3. younger / brighter learners at the school, peer groups, other teachers; </li></ul><ul><li>4. 5. </li></ul>

(cont) <ul><li>Get their writing edited / published ! </li></ul><ul><li>Have them write for adults / professionals instead of / as well as students. </li></ul><ul><li>Before launching / evaluating writing projects, ensure an audience for their work. . If they’re the other learners in the class, allot time during / after your lessons for them to read and respond. </li></ul>
