Frost-bitten and famine- stricken(golpeados por ), exhausted by rearguard clashes(conflicto de retaguardia) and partisan raids(asaltos partisanos), Napoleon’s Grande Army was shrinking (mermada)rapidly. The emperor led his troops to Smolensk, where he hoped to find food and shelter, but there was no food and no warm quarters in the war- ravaged(escaramuzas) city.
