Ask, Seek or Knock?
Organizing Your Prayer Requests
So you have made your prayer list. You have several
prayer petitions. Over time your list grows and
Your prayer life feels stagnant. You keep reading from
your prayer list, but you feel as if little is happening.
Try this method for categorizing your requests. This
method will help you partner with God for a more
effective prayer life.
Categorize Your Prayer Requests
Write down your prayer petitions. Before you pray, list
the appropriate letter designation next to your
A = Ask
S = Seek
K = Knock
Should You A, S or K?
When determining the appropriate letter designation,
review your request, and determine the correct
category based upon the following key, which best
represents the petition’s circumstances:
A = Ask – Completely out of anyone’s control
S = Seek – Direction or guidance is needed
K = Knock – May require some action on your part
When Do You Simply Ask?
If your prayer request is totally out of your hands, all you
can do is simply Ask God for help. Some examples of
these type of requests may be:
Healing for ourselves or a loved one
Safety during travel or for our military
Freedom from bondage
* These are typically the most heart-wrenching requests.
When Do You Seek?
If you are praying for guidance or direction, you will need
to Seek God’s will. Some ways to do this is to:
Read God’s Word
Consult your spouse or a Christian woman for godly
Here are some examples of when you should Seek:
Deciding on a major decision
Experiencing unexpected change
* These requests are usually urgent and time-sensitive.
When Should You Knock?
If your prayer petition could benefit from some action on your part, be
open to God leading you to participate, or “Knock”
Note: God can do miraculous things, but for the most part, He will
use practical means to accomplish His will, which includes using
Examples of when to Knock:
Instead of only praying for an impoverished neighbor, give some
financial support if led to
Instead of only praying your friend receives Jesus, pray that you will
be given the opportunity to share your testimony with her.
*These requests will take us out of our comfort zone.

Making Your A, S or K Prayer Plan
Once you have made the correct designations for your prayer petitions, then
you will want to tweak your requests.
To the right of your request, add a more effective prayer thought, based upon
what you think God is leading you to do. For example:
Release for my son’s drug problem – fast every Monday, and pray specific
scriptures for freedom from bondage over him (in addition to setting up
treatment with a professional).
Want to leave my job – discuss with my husband, more Bible reading in
order to secure a specific word; wait for God to provide my next
Healing for my sister’s depression – send her a weekly card with a new
scripture of encouragement; provide her with contact information of a good
* All of these are done along with prayer.
The Prayer Paradigm Shift
Remember Prayer is not about just sending up requests.
Prayer encompasses your whole relationship with God. You are part
of the Kingdom of God, and are commissioned:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and
teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And
surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew
If you really get this revelation about prayer, you will become much
more engaged in Christian living and your prayer discipline will
become highly effective. God will do great things with you and
through you! So don’t forget to Ask, Seek or Knock your prayers!
