  2. 2. What is a wetland? • Wetlands can be a bog, marsh or swamp • Some wetlands may have visible surface water only a few weeks per year
  3. 3. Fauna refers to animal life Fish Reptiles Mammals Aquatic insects Amphibians
  4. 4. MN Wetland - Fauna –Many animals depend on wetlands for homes –Fish, amphibians, reptiles, aquatic insects and certain mammals need wetlands as a place for their young to be born.
  5. 5. Flora and Fauna • Flora refers to plant life Reeds Cattails Grasses
  6. 6. Carnivorous Plants Sundew • 4 species grow in bogs and along lakes • Uses its leaves to lure and trap prey • Thin spines grow on tips of leaves; each spine holds a drop of glue • Insects are drawn to the glue which looks like dew or nectar
  7. 7. Carnivorous Plants Pitcher-Plant • Grows in bogs and swamps • Long, smooth stalk with a huge flower • Leaf holds water • Around the hood & mouth, nectar glands attract insects • Slippery surface forces the insect to slip into the water
  8. 8. Wetland Plant Life Labrador Tea • Evergreen found in bogs & swamps • Endures cold winters, hot summers, flooding & drought • Green leaves used to brew tea
