The Phases of Matter.pptx

  1. 1. The Phases of Matter MATTER
  2. 2. Phases of Matter Water is one of the basic needs of living things. About 75 percent of our planet is covered by water; which comes in different forms as solid (ice in the polar ice caps and glaciers) as liquid (water on the surface or underground), or as gas (water vapor in the atmosphere). The water on the surface of Earth is constantly changing among these three phases.
  3. 3. Ice can change to water or water vapor. Water can change to ice or water vapor. Water vapor can change to ice or water. This is an endless process that connects all of these phases of water.
  4. 4. Phases Changes Phase Change- is a type of reversible physical change that makes the phase of matter change due to absorption or the release of heat. When a substance changes its phase, its form, volume, and particle motion may change as well.
  5. 5. 6 Phase changes that matter can undergo: 1. Melting 2. Freezing 3. Vaporization 4. Condensation 5. Sublimation 6. Deposition
  6. 6. 6 Phase changes that matter can undergo: 1. Melting- is a process by which substance in the solid phase turns into the liquid phase. 2. Freezing or Solidification- a substance in liquid phase may turn into solid by freezing it. Solid Melting Freezing Liquid
  7. 7. 6 Phase changes that matter can undergo: 3. Vaporization- is the process by which a liquid turns into gas. When a substance reaches its boiling point, it starts to change into gaseous phase. 4. Condensation- is a process by which a gas turns into a liquid. This happens when water vapor comes in contact with a cool surface. It loses heat and changes back into liquid water. Liquid Vaporization Condensation Gas
  8. 8. 6 Phase changes that matter can undergo: 5. Sublimation- is a process by which a solid turns directly into gas. When sublimation occurs, the substance does not go through a liquid phase. 6. Deposition- occurs when a gas turns directly into a solid. Similar to sublimation, this process also skips the liquid phase. Solid Gas Sublimation Deposition

  10. 10. QUESTIONS?
  11. 11. Asynchronous Task “Water Cycle Diorama” The DOST held a program on the usefulness of hydrologic energy and on how water behaves in different states of matter within the water cycle. In order to realize this program, as a scientist you were tasked to present the water cycle through a 3D diorama explaining how water behaves and label the three important steps: evaporation, condensation and precipitation and needs to be an arrow showing the direction of the water cycle.
