Four-month-old lowland gorilla Tumaini learns to walk on July 18 at the Diane Fossey Gorilla Center in Goma, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Tumaini, which means hope in the Kiswili language, was rescued from poachers two months ago and arrived to the center in poor health. She and other gorillas are cared for by specialists trying to preserve the dwindling population of great apes in Congo.

The recent heat wave has been exhausting for everyone and animals are no exception, said Catherine Tozer, assistant manager of the farm. All the animals have been struggling with the heat so we have just tried to do everything we can to make them more comfortable. After the initial shock and a bit of investigation, the ice lollies went down a real treat, she said.

Pygmy hippopotamuses 'Thug', left, and 'Nicky' line up to have their teeth cleaned with a new giant toothbrush at the London Zoo. The hippos' teeth are regularly cleaned by zoo keepers as part of their care routine and until now a broom for each hippo has done the job perfectly. This summer keepers decided the brooms just weren't snazzy enough for the hippos and ordered two giant 5-foot toothbrushes for the pair, a pink one for Thug and a blue one for Nicky.
