  2. 2.  Recently Operation Smile collaborated to host an event focusing on surgery for the 67th World Health Assembly at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Hosted as a private reception, the event, titled Improving Safe Emergency and Essential Surgical Care and Anaesthesia, highlighted the importance of surgery in issues of public health for the first time at the World Health Assembly. Statistics show that more deaths occur as result of having no access to surgery than from malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis combined.
  3. 3.  By hosting this event about surgical care at the World Health Assembly, Operation Smile indirectly advocated its own work as an international charity focused on providing children with safe surgery for cleft lip and cleft palate since 1982.
