  2. 2. ETHICS IS ABOUT CHOICES Good Ethics  Right Choice  Bad Ethics …? Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference Robert Frost
  3. 3. Unsportsman-like conduct… 15-yard penalty!!
  4. 4. Defining Ethics… “ On matters of style, swim with the current, on matters of principle, stand like a rock.” - Thomas Jefferson
  5. 5. Embracing Ethics… This kind of thinking landed Jefferson’s likeness on our currency. Don’t be too quick to downplay the value of ethics.
  6. 6. Considering Ethics… Ethics is:  a system of moral principles: culture of a company.  the recognized rules of conduct and/or practices in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture, etc.: medical ethics; legal ethics.  moral principles, as of an individual: ”I can not tell a lie” – G. Washington  philosophy dealing with values, as they relate to human conduct; to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions; to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions: “The end justifies the means” – Machiavelli “ Golden Rule”- most cultures and religious systems
  7. 7. What Ethics Is Putting The Pieces Together “Looking At The Choices” • Ethics has a place in everything we do … and affects the outcome by how we chose to do • Ethics IS all about understanding our choices and “doing the right thing for the right reasons”
  8. 8. What Ethics Is Putting The Pieces Together In dealing with ethics, we must make a choice. We have two we can choose from- both have consequences: 1. Choose good ethics 2. Choose bad ethics Ethics is about choices.  Do we consistently try to do the right thing, all the time?  At a deeper level “ can you do the right thing even when it doesn’t “personally benefit you?”
  9. 9. You Get to Choose!
