1. 1. iFlakes Mathematical Investigation
 2. 2. What are we investigating?

A primary school parent group is planning to set up a breakfast club. They are looking for three nutritious cereals to serve.

 3. 3. Step 1

Survey your group to find the cereals that students your age like to eat.

Move to one other group and survey those girls too.

Graph the cereals using a bar graph

 4. 4. Step 2 – Bring in 7 types of cereal boxes

Investigate the nutritional value of at least seven cereals (including iFlakes) by examining the percentages of protein, fat, carbohydrate, sugar and fibre they contain.

 5. 5. Step 3

Put the values of each of these ingredients for every different cereal into a table, showing clearly the amount of fat, carbohydrate, sugar, protein and fibre in each. Make sure you are comparing same amounts (eg per 100grams)

PER 100g FAT FIBRE SUGAR CARB PRO C1 C2 C3 C4 C5 C6 C7
 6. 6. THINK ABOUT NUTRITION

Think about acceptable amounts of fat, protein, carbohydrate, fibre and protein. How much of each make up a nutritional breakfast cereal?

 7. 7. Graphing each food component

Now, compare the cereals by graphing each one’s food component. You should have five graphs, one for fat, for protein, for carbohydrates, fibre and sugar.

 8. 8. Make Your Recommendations

As a group, write up a short pursuasive speech to justify your choice of three nutritious cereals for the Breakfast Club .
