iPads can augment existing practice• Notepad• Calculator• Web-browser• Word-processor• Camera• Communication device
This is great but ….• The danger is we just do more of the same…
Key issues for us:• How will iPads support the Abbot Beyne Learning model?• How will iPads personalise learning?• How will iPads transform learning?• These three points are all linked
SAMR model• Substitution• Augmentation• Modification• Redefinition• Our goal is modification and redefinition (with a bit of augmentation along the way!)
So the key question is..• Will iPads enhance or transform the learning taking place in your classroom?• Do not mistake short term engagement due to the novelty of the device for deeper long-term engagement brought about by a genuine transformation of learning
Mandinach and Cline – 4 stages of technological proficiency amongst teachers• Survival• Mastery• Impact – where the transformation really begins• Innovation• http://www.lesn.appstate.edu/edtech/riedl/integ rate/dana_robbins.html
Impact• Technology is embedded across the curriculum and throughout the school.• Teaching style becomes more learner- centered and varied• Greater choice is given to the students in how they learn and approach tasks
How to get to impact?• Must become familiar with the technology• Borrow an iPad over weekend/holiday• School is investing in wireless infrastructure and if pilot is successful, will invest in more devices for staff and students• Linking what we ‘do’ with the ABLM• Read and observe (Newsletter, Twitter, Blogs, Peer-observation)• Use them in lessons• Persevere!
