4. In Ancient Rome latin was the spoken language, and in the noble classes and in the educated classes it remained pure enough; but language is alive and changes constantly, due to circumstances, contacts with different peoples, fashions. People start ,in a short time, to be detached from the pureness of classical latin, adding or removing,or readapting words and rules of grammar. Just because used by the “ vulgo” (uncultured lower classes) , this way of speaking, out of any rules of appropriate latin, was said “vulgar”. With the fall of Rome latin was used only for official documents and for Works of Art. The “ Cantico delle Creature” (religious poem) of St. Francesco of Assisi, is the first poem written completely in “ vulgar” ; “ Vulgar” which is in fact at the rootes of the italian language. It has been dated in 1224, two years before Francesco’s death. The “Cantico” is a complete hymn of thanksgiving to God for all the beautiful things He has given us, human creatures. - Thanks to our Brother the Sun,who lightens and heates us and allows Life. - For our Sister the Moon and for the Stars who illuminate the dark nights. - For our Sister the Water who quenches our thirst and helps plants to grow. - For our Brother the Fire who, besides Light and Heat, allows us so many activities! - For our Sister the Earth, who feedes the plants as water quenches them. - Even for our Sister the Death who allows us to be reunited to our Creator CLICK
