Educational technology <ul><li>Educational technology is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources. </li></ul><ul><li>Educational technology is used in the process of developing human capability </li></ul><ul><li>Explanation and meaning </li></ul><ul><li>Educational technology is an array of tools that might prove helpful in advancing student learning. </li></ul><ul><li>Those who employ educational technologies to explore ideas and communicate meaning are learners or teachers. </li></ul>

History of Educational Technology <ul><li>It is marked by the increasing complexity and sophistication of devices </li></ul><ul><li>Technology replacing teachers </li></ul><ul><li>Visual education  and  visual instruction </li></ul><ul><li>Audiovisual education, audiovisual instruction  and  audiovisual devices </li></ul><ul><li>Instructional media in school museums </li></ul>

Films <ul><li>Silent films were produced for instructional use </li></ul><ul><li>Administrative units take charge of films and related media </li></ul><ul><li>Films never reached the influence predicted </li></ul><ul><li>Problems: </li></ul><ul><li>Teachers' lack of skill </li></ul><ul><li>The cost of films, equipment, etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Inaccessibility of equipment when needed </li></ul>

Radio <ul><li>Commercial and educational stations </li></ul><ul><li>Radio did not have the impact its advocates had hoped </li></ul><ul><li>Problems: </li></ul><ul><li>Poor audio reception and the cost of equipment </li></ul><ul><li>Lack of fit between the broadcasts and teachers' agendas </li></ul><ul><li>It was abandoned when television became available </li></ul>
  6. 6. Television <ul><li>World War II provided a boost for audiovisual education </li></ul><ul><li>Rapid development of educational television stations (public) </li></ul>

Computer <ul><li>It was not until the 1980s, and the appearance of microcomputers, that many educators and public officials became enthusiastic about computers </li></ul><ul><li>by 2000 there war an average of one computer for every five students </li></ul><ul><li>with 97 percent of schools having Internet connections </li></ul>

Theories <ul><li>Behaviorism </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Provide clear statements of what learners should be able to do following instruction </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Break complex units of knowledge and skills into smaller and simpler units </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Individualize instruction as much as possible </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>An analysis of the steps needed to ensure learning </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Cognitivism </li></ul><ul><ul><li>It looks beyond behavior to explain brain-based learning </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Cognitivists consider how human memory works to promote learning </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Transfer-of-learning theories were popular among classroom teachers </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>transfer the teacher's knowledge and textbook content to the students‘ mind </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Constructivism </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Learners construct their own meaning from new information, as they interact with reality or others with different perspectives </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Students utilize their prior knowledge and experiences to formulate new, related, and/or adaptive concepts in learning </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The role of the teacher becomes that of a facilitator </li></ul></ul>
