You probably know Salesforce. It is a CRM Software as a Service and a worldwide success story. What do we have in common e xcept for SaaS ? Click) We are both game changers ! Before Salesforce, CRM required big investments for licences and implementation. In a similar way, the software deployment in Retail Stores requires trained engineers, with high cost and low speed, specially for global chains. Yes, traditional Centralized architectures have fast deployment, but requires back up systems as additional lines and / or fat clients, for disconnected operations. They suffer scalability limits and they are not built on open standards. We are changing all of this.
With aKite , you need just a plain PC and a plain Internet connection, anywhere in the world. Just type login and password in a web page and after few minutes the Front or Back Store Smart Clients will be ready for immediate use. They will be constantly and automatically updated from the Internet during their lifetime. A broken PC can be substituted by a generic technician or even by a sale assistant in few minutes. Smart Clients, somewhere between Thin and Fat Clients, are Internet-centric light desktop application that manage rich interface, several peripherals and a local database (in our case SQL Compact Edition) for faster sales in connected AND disconnected mode . A Poin Of Sale cannot stop even for few minutes , and must deliver a wide range of services.
The aKite Retail Web Services are an intelligent HUB on the Clouds . We chosed Microsoft Windows Azure because it is much more than Virtual machines on demand. It is an advanced Platform as a Service where system problems like fault tolerance, load balancing, disaster recovery, and so on are handled automatically so we can concentrate on adding value for our customers. Sales made in each store reach immediately our HUB, are persisted on SQL Azure and forwarded to chain HQ and, in case, to other services. In the upper Cloud you can see CRM, EDI, Logistics, Business Intelligence, ... For example we are now working on integration with Social Networks like Facebook.
Today , the Retail Software market is still based on Pre-internet concepts, swinging from Centralized to Dipartimental Architecture, in a dilemma between thin or fat clients. Both have symmetrical advantages and disadvantages, so whatever you choose, you have to put some patch. Click ) We adopted a Post-Internet approach with a Service Oriented Architecture: Software modeled on business services, easily interconnected inside and outside the company among different HW and SW platforms as interoperability is in the Internet DNA. aKite Retail Web Services on the Clouds allows native data sharing AND Smart Client in the Stores allows rich and fast operations, in connected AND disconnected mode. Of course our Smart Clients are much lighter than a fat client and some special operations can be performed only when connected. If a Retailer needs local AND central services anytime, he can buy a second redundant connection, but as an option.
Even old legacy software can be sold on a pay per use mode, but a real SaaS application designed on top of a modern Platform as a Service, and not just on a mega-data-center in the Clouds, has fundamental benefits The Service Level Agreement is assured by Microsoft. HW failures, System or application software upgrades are handled without any service interruption. Windows Azure offers scalability without any practical limit. We and our customers are not worried anymore from peak sales response time or rapid chain expansion. The complex problems are handled by the Microsoft PaaS and this allows us to focus on customers business problems , and our customers can focus on buying and selling. Finally … No more Capital Expenses, but only clear and predictable Operating Expenses.
