  23. 23. What is Hackney Yoga Project? Hackney Yoga Project (HYP) is a pilot project developing a best practice model for working with yoga and the refugee and asylum-seeking in Hackney, one of the most deprived areas in the UK.   The mission is to improve the quality of life for these women through yoga practice, by creating a safe and respectful space and removing barriers to participation (travel cost, childcare, language and misperception being the main ones).    The women HYP works with have been displaced from their homelands due to war and natural disaster. They come from Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Iran, India and more. Many have experienced gender based violence and some, torture.   Some are also destitute – not street homeless but living off charity and friend’s hand-outs.
  24. 24. The BriefHYP is about to go on a major fundraising push and is in urgent need of a visual identityto help them on this missionThe challenge is to create a visual identity/look and feel for HYP which helps to expresstheir story and mission in an engaging and soulful way.Use design to help diffuse the ‘critical tension’ that exists for women labelled asrefugees and asylum seekers and the challenges that creates for them.Design will initially roll out on the web ideally using a platform which the HYP can easilypopulate and update themselves e.g Wordpress/Tumblr
