Bold City: A Bold Vision for Langa

Bold Idea: The Langa Quarter aims to empower the residents of Langa through the creation of a sustainable tourist destination in the community. This is a bold idea because of the negative perceptions surrounding townships in South Africa that must be overcome for the project to succeed, and the much needed community buy in needed for this project to be successful.

Editor's Notes

  • Hello and introduction to me, my background
  • History of Fifteen and the setting up, how I became involved some of the challenges – my role looking after the beneficiaries
  • Seeing both Sides, South Africa having the perfect conditions for Social EnterpriseI enjoy mentoring met some young entrrepenuers
  • Explain where is Langa , and its strategic location center of the city, with in the cities three main economic zones, the Constantia of townships,
  • My first impressions of Langa,Tourist taking pictures of me
  • Langa which means Sun, is in fact named after Chief Langalibalele – roughly translated ‘sun is scorching hot’, In the late 1800’s after a falling out, the governor of Natal organised a militia and chased the chief through the Drakensberg mountains into Lesotho. He was captured., a notorious show trial followed, where he was wrongly found guilty and was imprisoned on Robben Island, He was eventually sent to live under house arrest on Uitvlugt farm near Pinelands, which became known as Langa’s place. Incidentaly ,The founder of the ANC John ‘Langalibalele’ Dube is also named after him,The Langa Quarter is just off the N2 to the right of the soon to be redeveloped Athlone Power station. The street layout of the Langa Quarter is in the shape of the number 1,The story of Chief Langalibalele with its origins in the Drakensberg mountains will connect the Langa Quarter with Giants Castle Nature Reserve, and the midlands Meander in KZN.
  • Already one can follow the Langalibalele Ridge and take Langalibalele pass into Lesotho. (I have and it nearly killed me)The nearby Midlands Meander has the largest number of domestic tourists in the country. The Langa Quarter will target this market, as well as position itself as the first port of call in Cape Town, for those wishing to explore the Drakensberg and Midlands.
  • The off spring of the middle class unable to break into the central cape town CBD due to old ownership patterns and structures and no access to wealth
  • The Idea behind it
  • If your looking for the Langa Quarter look for number 1, or Number 1 Cape TownA new tourist destination for international, and domestic tourist and capetonians
  • The project evolved into the Langa Quarter A local school was closed down because of lack of students and became decrepit in danger of being scavenged
  • Explain how we started
  • The black plaque scheme what did the community value and how could we use that to stimulate interest in the general communityCoffee table book
  • Phase TWO - We protect the things we love- Different initiatives to combat crime partnerships – Street Ambassadors
  • Real time Data - Social impact, as well as customer service data will be displayed in real time and will include; visitor numbers, customer satisfaction, jobs days created etc. Street Ambassadors will conduct simple visitor surveys and Langa quarter businesses will be encouraged to keep records of visitor interactions.
  • Enterprise Development – Corporate involvementImportant component of Social enterprise
  • Corporates and community a beautiful partnership
  • The basic projects and programs - Let me go get funding, now this took a lot longer than expected,
  • Enterprise and Entrepreneur Development centre,
  • The Majority of the population live,Exciting Developments happening across the flatsThe young black and coloured aspirant emerging middle class find it difficult to gain a foothold in the former whites only areas
  • The Langa Quarter the gateway to the cape flatsSomeone told me that capetonians would never travel to philipi, we must give them a reason to travel to philippi and the creative socially enterprising amongst will do that.
  • We aim to change the notion forever that townships are no go areas. If you would like to be kept up-to-date with developments go to lanagaquarter.co.za or for any more information my contacts are on this last slide.,Please do take down my contacts as I do not have up to date business cards
