Introduction to the endocrine system. <ul><li>There are heaps of different body systems that </li></ul><ul><li>make the human body work; one of the two systems that controls these many many systems is the endocrine system. </li></ul><ul><li>The endocrine system is like a post office because it </li></ul><ul><li>sends out messages around the body, as hormones </li></ul><ul><li>which travel in the bloodstream using it like a highway. All </li></ul><ul><li>this is done without you thinking. </li></ul><ul><li>In this guide you will find out most about one of the most mysterious systems in the body. </li></ul>

What systems are associated with the endocrine system. <ul><li>All of them. </li></ul><ul><li>The nervous system sends commands to the pituary gland, </li></ul><ul><li>just below the brain (the nervous system) then </li></ul><ul><li>the pituitary gland sends its signals to the other glands </li></ul><ul><li>so they can start working. The hormones the glands send </li></ul><ul><li>out travel in the bloodstream (the circulatory system), regulate </li></ul><ul><li>the kidneys (the urinary system), informs the immune system of </li></ul><ul><li>viruses (the immune system), control growth (all of them), </li></ul><ul><li>constructs bone (skeletal system) and surprisingly controls </li></ul><ul><li>your mood! (Is your mood even a system?!) </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>The endocrine system works by the pituary gland sending out hormones to the different glands via the bloodstream, these hormones contain instructions on weather to increase the level of a certain hormone in a part or the body or to decrease it. There are many different types of hormones in the body all with different effects like causing tiredness, hunger or growth. Without this </li></ul><ul><li>system we wouldn’t grow, sleep, have feelings eat or stop bleeding </li></ul><ul><li>when we got a cut. Without this system, we wouldn’t exist! </li></ul>How the endocrine system works

Adrenaline <ul><li>The Adrenal glands produce adrenaline which is a partially powerful hormone. </li></ul><ul><li>Adrenaline is a fluid in you that gets released when you </li></ul><ul><li>are in a high stress situation or a life threatening situation, </li></ul><ul><li>it increases breathing rate, heart rate contracts muscles and </li></ul><ul><li>more. It is also activated by bright lights or loud music. </li></ul><ul><li>We evolved to have it purely so we can survive. </li></ul>
  6. 6. illnesses <ul><li>Endocrine illnesses can mostly be divided into 3 groups. Endocrine gland hypo secretion (not enough hormones), Endocrine gland hyper secretion (too many hormones) or abnormal growth. </li></ul><ul><li>To name a few there are, Adrenal insufficiency in which the adrenal glands don’t produce enough hormones that regulate organ function and Goiter which is a swelling in the thyroid gland, it almost always leads to a swelling of the neck or voice box, it very rarely happens when the thyroid is working. </li></ul>
  7. 7. The different glands <ul><li>The different glands are the pituitary, thyroid, thymus, pineal </li></ul><ul><li>body and the adrenal glands. The pituary gland controls the </li></ul><ul><li>other glands, it is also the only gland connected to the </li></ul><ul><li>brain. The pineal gland is located in the center of the </li></ul><ul><li>brain, it is about the size of a grain of rice and it affects </li></ul><ul><li>the wake and sleep patterns. It secretes melatonin, </li></ul><ul><li>the pineal body is also known as the third eye. The thyroid </li></ul><ul><li>is one of the biggest glands in the body, it is found in the neck, it controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins and controls how sensitive the body should be to other hormones. The thymus is part of the immune system as well as the endocrine system; the only known function of it is the production and education of T-lymphocytes which are critical cells of the immune system, it is made up of two lobes and located near the center of the chest. The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys, they affect kidney function and make adrenaline. </li></ul>
  8. 8. The different hormones <ul><li>. There are lots of different hormones, every few days a new one is </li></ul><ul><li>being discovered. </li></ul><ul><li>A few of them are melatonin, serotonin, adrenaline, calcitonin, </li></ul><ul><li>ghrelin, growth hormone and thrombopoietin. Melatonin causes </li></ul><ul><li>drowsiness, serotonin controls feelings, hunger and sleep, </li></ul><ul><li>adrenaline we have already mentioned, calcitonin makes bone and </li></ul><ul><li>reduces blood, ghrelin stimulates hunger and makes the pituary </li></ul><ul><li>release growth hormone, growth hormone stimulates growth and </li></ul><ul><li>thrombopoietin produces platelets </li></ul>
