During Katrina one of the best Laundry Chiefs was an executive from a major national bank. For anyone with the right attitude (“I will do anything to help”) there always is a job to be done.
 6. 6.

The definition of a disaster includes that emergency responders will be overwhelmed

Depending on the size and duration of the disaster DART will use convergent volunteers

They have not gone through DART training. It may be hard to fit in

Convergents may have excellent animal handling qualifications, such as registered veterinary technicians or veterinarians not licensed in the State of California

Others may have no training or expertise at all and will receive on the job training and supervision

The more serious the disaster is, the more DART will need convergent volunteers. Every DART graduate should be prepared to mentor and oversee convergent volunteers.
 7. 7.

In general, convergent volunteers should not work directly with animals or perform tasks such as intake that have legal ramifications

Areas where convergent volunteers could be of good use are:

Assembling or cleaning crates

Act as greeters or line monitors

Warehouse and delivery

Distributing leaflets

If a disaster lasts a long time laundry becomes a necessity – great for convergent volunteers
 8. 8.

Have the same color ID as trained volunteers

Wear Royal Blue colored shirts

Be allowed in areas where there are animals unless they have been given a task that requires them to be there

Work night shifts

Be deployed for more than 7 days

The Dollar Store (supplies) is a great area for convergent volunteers
 9. 9.

Convergents have enough work to do

Convergents receive adequate briefing on the tasks they are asked to perform

Convergents are under supervision of trained volunteers

Convergents feel appreciated for the work they do

Convergents are told about how to become a trained volunteer

Human food preparation
