  1. 1. Irregular Verbs Mini Lesson By: Frank Barbrie

Review…PAST TENSE <ul><li>A verb tense used to express an action or a condition that occurred in or during the past </li></ul><ul><li>Past tense show actions or events at a specific time in the past. </li></ul><ul><li>The actions or events START or STOP at a specific time in the past. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Review <ul><li>We learned in previous lessons…to change a regular verbs to the past tense we add “ed” to the end of the verb…for example: </li></ul><ul><li>Present tense: I play football everyday. </li></ul><ul><li>Past tense : I play (ed) football yesterday. </li></ul>
  4. 4. NOTE TO REMEMBER : There are no rules that exist to form the past tense for irregular verbs. <ul><li>Irregular verbs don’t follow a pattern in the simple past tense like regular verbs do…they are very different. You can’t simply add “ed” to the verb to show action in the past tense. </li></ul><ul><li>It is necessary to recognize and memorize these verbs . </li></ul>

READ THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES. <ul><li>Sentences with irregular verbs (present tense) . </li></ul><ul><li>I run to school. </li></ul><ul><li>I run in the morning. </li></ul><ul><li>I run five miles everyday. </li></ul><ul><li>I runn(ed) to school. (This is incorrect) because run is an irregular verb. </li></ul><ul><li>Sentences with irregular verbs in the past tense (past tense) </li></ul><ul><li>I ran to school. </li></ul><ul><li>I ran in the morning. </li></ul><ul><li>I ran five miles yesterday. </li></ul><ul><li>Notice: No “ed” was put at the end of the verb. </li></ul>

  7. 7. Practice <ul><li>He is in London today . </li></ul><ul><li>He was in London yesterday . </li></ul><ul><li>He has been in London for a week . </li></ul>

  9. 9. Practice <ul><li>He eats hot dogs everyday for lunch. </li></ul><ul><li>He ate hot dogs yesterday for lunch. </li></ul><ul><li>He has eaten hot dogs all week for lunch. </li></ul>

  11. 11. Practice <ul><li>Andrew gets a large check every month . </li></ul><ul><li>Andrew got a large check last month . </li></ul><ul><li>Andrew has gotten a large check every month this year. </li></ul>
