  3. 3. Announcement of Rakuten• In early this year, Rakuten announced that its official language is English by 2012. It is surprised the many people.• Board meetings and weekly all-company meetings will do in English.• In cafeteria, menu is English.

Helping for all-English from Rakuten• After announcement, Mizutani, a head of Rakuten, said that if you can not speak English you can not work in Rakuten.• Employees take a lesson for English, but no helping from Rakuten. There is not money from company. Employees use own money, and take lesson.

Helping for all-English from Rakuten 2• Rakuten prepare 200 space for learning English, but many people applied lesson of English.• Berlitz offers a discount for Rakuten employees.• Berlitz thinks that Rakuten is success by do all- English plan.• Gan Yaguchi who is sales manager in Berlitz Japan said that lesson for Rakuten employees is very important.

How about other companies?• In Fast Retailing Co. ▫ It start all-English planning by March 2012, but meetings do in Japanese.• In Nissan Motor Co. ▫ It don’t have language rules because it is headed Carlos Ghosn.• In Nomura Holdings Inc. ▫ It is same with Nissan. It have to communicate with foreign colleagues.

Employees study hard• Actually many Rakuten employees don’t need to speak English.• Rakuten has 6,000 employees and 400 people are not Japanese. 16 board members are Japanese and headquarters in Tokyo.• Mizutani believe that all-English plan is success.• One of employees said that if company’s order is it, I will do it.
