Newton Marshall was born on March 2nd 1983 in Jamaica. In his early life, he lived in extreme poverty
and had a poor education. The first time he ever actually got to see the snow was only four years ago.
For ten years he worked as a tour guide and is now working for the Jamaican security. Newton did the
Yukon Quest, which is considered even harder than the Iditarod, and placed in 13th .Being the first
Jamaican to compete in these kinds of races, he gained instant popularity. Newton is Now 31.He got
his dogs that he's currently working with from The Jamaican society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
This year Newton finished the race and placed in 43rd out of 69. He took twelve
days, one hour, five minutes and fifty-two seconds. Newton started out with sixteen
dogs and finished with thirteen.
Gary Paulsen is an author who wrote a book about the Iditarod he did. Newton and
Gary have both experienced hallucinations during the race and have both struggled
and have given up everything for the Iditarod. Gary raced in the Iditarod in the same
year that Newton was born.
