- The term audiovisual or AV resource refers to anything that our learners can see and/or hear.
- Audio visual equipment and techniques include: - Overhead projections - PowerPoint Presentations - Whiteboard and flip-chart paper - CDs and audio tapes - Videos - Technology - Equipment from the workplace - Activities - Case Studies - Role Plays - And Games
- Using audio visual techniques as part of a well-planned session can be a great enhancement. However, over use or rigid use can change the focus of the session from the learner to the Audio/visual aid. It is important to keep the session learner focused.
- There are pros and cons to each type of audio visual aid. Computers are essential for hands-on software training. However, they can be difficult for new learners or learners with low typing ability. Computers may be outdated, and skills need to be used frequently in order to be maintained.
- Communication technology such as phones, voicemail, and microphones allow for hands-on practice opportunities. However the equipment may not be the same in training as in the work place.
- A/V technology such as televisions, videos, CDs and audiotapes provide an aid that learners can relate to and allow a secondary support of information in a slightly different form. However, some learners may not take these types of aids seriously or may feel reluctant to ask questions while they are in use.
- Overhead projections are simple effective ways to summarise blocks of information. However some learners may find them distracting and they do not allow for hands-on participation. Additionally, the equipment can become a bulky barrier in small rooms, and the display is static rather than engaging.
- Workplace tools and equipment are a great aid for learners to practise on. It is important not to get lost in the action and forget the theoretical principles, instructions and diagrams, or some learners may not be able to remember the information.
